Who has upgraded their brakes due to FI?

for the past several races i've been eating up my brakes (working on compressing my brake zone)...as a result i've been going through pads and rotors (a set every other weekend from heat soak) [warning: found this out the difficult way...the rear calipers on these cars are like the miatas and have a special 5 mm allen screw that retracts the piston...it is hidding by a 14mm bolt on the back of the caliper!]

i'm about to say screw it and get a big front and rear brake kit but wonder what is out there and who has what?

I have been working with Baer for a few days now about getting something made.If we can get this rolling we should have something by the end of the year.

Thank You,
Beau

thanks Beau...i'd like to see a baer kit as they make some good products

however, since i do at least 2 weekends a month at the track (with another in August and 2 in Sept and Oct...maybe another in Nov) end of year is probably too late for me and i'll buy long before then...even HAWK or Carbotech pads with ducting and slotted and cd rotors is still not enough

i've found the 13" RR racing kit (KVR calipers) ~$1,300 and it comes with 2 piece rotors, StopTech kit ~$1600, and a potential Wilwood kit but not sure how much it costs

I got a friend where I live who can get willwoods for a little over cost. I have him checking for me and I'll post the price when he tells me.

starflare: i've been driving my car in 20-30 minute wheel to wheel at road racing tracks such as Summit Point, Virginia International Raceway, The Glen, Beaverun, and so on. I'd get up to speeds of ~130mph on the main straights...i started out using Carbotech Bobcat's, then switched to Hawk HPS and now Hawk HP Plus...i'm running ate Super Blue DOT 4 fluid...the fluid is fine with no problems with bubbling (only time i had this problem was with the DOT 3 fluid)...it's the pads and rotors that can't stand the heat

bigg tim...you've got my interest as i'm fighting a losing, time consuming and expensive battle...thanks.

Joel, Ion performance as a bigbrakekit for the front and rears, but im not sure if anyone has purchased or installed it. also i hear it takes them a long time for delivery.

Glad to see you are using your car to its potenial, i have hawk hps pads on all 4 and my brakes are adequate for my driving style. You must really be beating on your car to eat those up.

Good luck with the car and future races.

that's the funny thing...i'm trying to use this car to its full potential (my braking needs some consistency)...i just need to address the typical shortcomings of upsetting the balance of the car b/c of adding lots of power...suspension is adequate with springs but the best mod on there is 16" rotas with falcon azenis (i was on the verge of selling the car and buying an e30 M3, 325is or ITR as most of my friends run them mostly stock as they are built for the abuse)

i'm looking at sourcing an used msp tranny (do it the easier way than you did)...it also has some strengthened internals and i'd get the beefier axles at the same time

Have you considered cryoforging the rotors?
An autox buddy who does several highspeed events was chewing through rotors on his s2000...he gave it a try and said it has helped.
He had swapped rotors something like three times last season but is halfway through the current season on the same set.

yah, those sound like pretty long lapping sessions. have you tried any of the porterfield line? the R4-S compound is a great street/track pad compound with minimal dust but maximum stopping power and prone to fade, while the R4 compound is more geared toward extreme street/regular track use. they do get dustier faster and tend to squeal just a little bit more then other pads but stop excellent. have you also considered the RR-Racing BBK's? the larger rotor diameter on the base kit looks tempting if you want something simple.

i figure if i'm going to spend $800 for a larger set of rotors i might as well get better calipers in the first place...the 2 piece rotors sound good as you only have to replace the actual iron rotor piece (was reading up on the 2 piece rotors available for the evo and sti in the latest SCC)

as for RR Racing...i'm not sure if anyone has this kit from them (site doesn't mention if they have anything for my car but just the mx-6 and probe)...i read a post by RR Racing about a potential groupbuy but it didn't look like it went through

I did.... www.e-racer.com

huge improvement over stock.
why so inexpensive...i like good deals but this seems too good to be true at a price of $749!

http://www.e-racer.com/prod05.htm

this is what it looks like it come with:
aluminium 4 piston calipers (what brand?)
11.7" rotors (blank iron i would assume based on the price)
wilwood t-compound brake pads (never used them before)
note: does not mention an adaptor plate to mount the new calipers to accept the larger rotors (1.7" larger than stock)

do you have any pics of the kit with everything included and then pics of them installed? the site has tiny pictures that i can hardly look at...i want to see them on a stock p5 wheel (and get an idea of any clearance issues)

The price relfects the fact that use a ONE piece rotor and that the kit does not include brake lines.

I kinda of lied...my brakes are being installed tomorrow. I have been procrastinating on this project.

I have seen 2 installed on cars from our club (www.toprotege.com). I test drove an automatic turbo charged p5 with these brakes and it was a HUGE improvement over stock, but still gave great pedal feel and balance from front and back brakes.

Here is one BIG pic.

Picture%20005.jpg

The kit includes 2 Rotors, 2 Calipers, 2 THICK mounting brakets, 2 sets of Wilwood Pads, all the hardware you need plus some extras.

I will take pics of the install.

Rock on, Beau! I have been searching for the last two months for a nice BB kit. End of the year will be a nice time for me to get it too.

thanks. YP5...that looks pretty decent (much better than the tiny pics on their site)...do they give you the part numbers or the car that the rotors are compatiable for? (like when i have to order new rotors and pads?)

jaje, I talked to my friend and he can get anything from WIllwood for 10% less. It's not much, but the brake kit will be like $1050. Go to Precision Brake Company's website and anything on there he can get. He might be able to piece something together if you want something different. He said that he was told that WIlwoods need to be overhauled every now and then, so that might suck. Someone in Texas has a kit and has done nothing yet, so who knows?!?!?
