Where to find rear privacy shelf (tonneau?) for '03 P5

My daughter just got herself an '03 Protege5... It doesn't have a privacy cover (might be called a tonneau cover) over the rear hatch area, and the dealer quoted me a obscene amount of $$$ for the various parts.

Any places I might locate an aftermarket or used one? I've tried some of the generic "used auto parts" links but no cigar.

TIA, ~john

I have the same issue, wrecking yards don't have these cars either so that's a no go....

Ummm.... bet he wouldnt mind pulling the part you need of this one.... but you could post a WTB (want to buy) on forums. pretty sure some one that doesnt want it would be willing to sell it to you

just out of curiousity how much they sell at the dealer? i could probly frabicate it for alot cheaper

I didn't get an exact price but the parts dude implied all the various parts (shelf, cords and clips that lash it to the hatch) would cost several hundred. I don't think he expected anybody to ever order one.

And you're right, fabrication is the way to go if you can come up with some material that would be appropriate and wouldn't look too home-cooked.

I am also missing this. I would DEFINETLY be interested. I will be looking around and post WTB's in for sale sections!

P.S.-I am pretty sure my dealer stated a cost to me of around $275 or something of that sort!

It would be really, really easy to make one. There is a bit of a shelf molded into the plastic for it to sit on. All you need is some light pressboard or other similarly stiff material, a bit of carpet (from a remnant), some glue, and a bit of string. At the high side, maybe $30 worth of materials.

Edited. This may be obvious but one point on safety: don't make the back shelf too strong or if the car gets rear ended hard the shelf might injure anyone sitting in the back seat. That's also a reason to cut it in the middle (like the standard one) so that it can fold up instead of being shoved into the rear seats.

That's what I'm thinkin'...

compressed hard board= $6 for sheet
carpet =5feet about $20(to cover top and bottom) $35 for vynle if i rember right, but also veries depending on type of vynle too
metal bar= $10
and other miscallanious items=$10
$45-60 in materials not including labor and shipping.

nothing fancey just simple flat design. what ill do is just make and il pm you first to see if you want to buy soo that way you dont have to send money and worry. probly looking at $60 with labor +shipping.. i think shipping will be the hardest part box will be pretty long and will need to be reinforced so stupidity doesnt crush it by "accident".
if your intrested let me know so i can start on it

if you end up building this I also might be interested in one

Yeah I made the mistake of leaving it ontop of my car a couple of weeks ago drove off and down the HWY... It stayed on till I got ont he hwy and now it's in a lot of peices somewhere I'm sure...... I didn't even know It was on there I forgot i put it up there... Oh well.....

i wish i knew where mine went, id send it to you. but ive moved 3 times since i got my car and im just not sure where it went. Ill look tonight and if i find it ill let you know, but i doubt ill find it

i had the same prob when i bought my p5, i just asked where to get one on here and someone had one..and alot of ppl out there are willing to sell theirs that just dont even use it that wouldnt mind the extra money

Try contacting Captain KRM P5 - he can likely get you one at a better price than the dealer.

I'm looking for one too. My dealer quoted me $350 for it. (boom07)

I had posted a WTB thread for one and there is someone forum name "yourfatherluke" that had one. He is in california so shipping for me would be a hassle plus I might have a lead on a local one. Pm him and try to work out a deal being in AZ you're a lot closer
