Where do you put the key?

Just ordered my AWD GT with tech package and waiting for delivery within a week or two (at port now). Stupid question occurred to me -- where do you all put the key while driving? I know I can keep it in my purse (away from cell), but I have a bad habit of leaving my purse in the car (locked, of course) while in the garage or running into the store. I can see myself very easily locking myself out of the car (or does the car not lock if keys are still inside). Don't always have pockets to stick the key in, and I understand that ignition button can't always get a good read from the key if it's placed inside a cupholder or other cabin bin. So just wondering where everyone here keeps their keys when in use?

Being a guy it's in my pocket. I would think your purse would work because once it's running you just put the purse where-ever you usually keep it. I am not sure of how close the key has to be for it to be sensed, insofar as starting it.

On my old Altima, there was a slot where the CX-5's navigation SD card is for the key fob in case battery was low. I really miss that little feature since I hate having keys rattle in the cup holder while i am driving and my pockets are already filled with stuff so I reluctantly put it in the cup holder.

don't know about the key but please don't leave your purse in the car...locked or not, it's a target for thieves who could care less about smashing your window....

I keep it in my pocket and my wife keeps it in her purse.

Pocket or make it a habit to carry your purse with you when you leave the car. No matter how small the errand might be.

In case you ever get locked out I suggest going to your local hardware and have them duplicate the medal key in the keyfob that only opens the door. Also pick up a magnetic keybox and attach it to the underside of the car or hood out of sight, so you can quickly get back in the car if you need to.

The car will not lock with the keyfob still inside, you will have to take it with you. According to the manual the cup holders are a dead zone for the key, not sure what that will mean.

I usually just keep in in my cheek like a chipmunk, looks like I am a world class dipper......My wife advocates her bra, but I am unwilling to take on cross dressing and having a new car at the same time.....besides, my mullet gets caught in the straps....GRIN

I don't plan on tasting my key. Or making a old school copy of it.

I just keep it in my pocket or jacket pocket. I think you just need to get into the habit of taking your purse with you wherever you go.

Spring loaded clip on my waist (occupational hazard of being a prison officer).
It's really handy. Missus likes when I accompany her as she doesn't have rummage around in her handbag!
Just hope she remembers to lock the car when I'm not with her.

If the battery goes dead you can put the back of the key up to the start button and it will let you start the car. Not sure if it relies on still having a very small charge or if there is a passive RFID chip in the back of the key, but that is what the manual says.

@hallr

I think you can lock the doors with the key if the fob is inside, I will check today.

@GAXIBM

+ 1 for making some copies of the metal back up key. It is a cheap blank and can save a lot of trouble. (not like Toyota or Audi which have the crazy laser cut keys)

Edit: I keep mine in my pocket, wife keeps it in her wallet inside her purse.

Just talked to the director of my parts department to get his opinion. While some hardware stores may have key blanks for a CX-5 it's not 100% certain they do.

My suggestion is to go to your Mazda dealer to get keys cut, for two reasons.
1) much better chance they have a key blank for it, old or new.
2) there is a reason you get the 5 digit code with one of your keys, in the event you need another key programmed. (more expensive, but worth more in the end)

And for the answer to the original post, i keep mine in my pocket, it's close enough proximity even in my left pocket (traditionally where I keep any of my keys)

I have confirmed that for those of us who like outdoor endeavors or locking their pets in a running, air conditioned vehicle for quick stops.

You CAN lock the car with the metal key with the fob inside (even with the car running and the fob inside!)
