wheel offset?

hi guys,
new here. and know nothing abt wheels/tires. can some one explain to me offset? pros and cons of it, what is it? THANKS

17 or 18 inch?

235/40/18 45 offset with a rear fender roll/trimmed

235/45/17 45 offset with a rear fender roll/trimmed

dont go anything higher than 45 offset like most recommend on the forum

i regret getting 17x8 50 offset....wish it was like 42 offset instead...
