What's the worst automotive advice you've been given?

^^I agree....stuff like Dawn will remove your wax layers...but this guy was insisting to never use ANY type of soap...just water!

my first room mate in college had the same habit it in the shower. it was pretty gross

I was told that i should run premium in my 89 S10 4.3Lv6 cuz it had such a big engine....

Not given to me but I listed as our wannabe service writer told this to a customer
"You should run premium gas because it has more detergents in it to clean carbon build up" ALthough it's 1\2 right. THis is also the same girl who wrote up RO's saying
"Customer states kalidescope sterring inop"

This is correct and is for safety reasons. Most reputable tire dealers will put new tires on the rear if only buying 2. A front tire blows you can still control the direction for the car. If a rear tire blows its much easier to lose control and fish tail into a wall or another car.

my original post was correct. the advice is bad.

GOOD tires always go on the back, BAD tires on the front.

CUT THE SPRINGS ON YOUR CAR GHETTO STYLE!!

I have a feeling he didn't mean to reply to your post

From kids on xbox live last night named "VTEC TURBO"

"Vtec is awesome for boost, once you get into VTEC it does every more boost so its twice as fast."

also

"yeah I own a yamaha R6, but I bored the block over so now its 900cc"..
(keeping in mind the R6 is 600cc)

I got this one a lot. I disconnected the valve timing solenoid when I put the turbo on, and this just absolutely shocked people on why I would do such a thing. I try to explain it but thats always an uphill battle.

Yeah people don't get it. My buddy just finished his B18A/B20 EK hatch. Just put a shiney new GT28RS on it. It absolutely screams. People ask if he has VTEC all the time. Its an absolute waste to be switching cam shaft profiles when in boost. There is nothing to gain from it. Yet somehow, people think its essential.

actually doesn't the comptec's s2k's S/C make almost no gain until vtec kicks in.

I noticed a 100 hp gain but it was all done in the top end

^^ most likely thats when the supercharger starts making good boost. If both valves are overlapping pressurized air is now depressurizing.

"You should put sand bags in your trunk for more weight so you get more traction."

This is for our winters by the way.

First off, my car is front wheel drive. Second, I want better gas mileage, and third, I like my rear suspension to last a little more.

Why most turbo'd hondas are VTEC is simply because they are using the better flowing VTEC heads such as the B18C or B16B. Great flowing heads vs the non-vtec heads. However, your far better off removing the VTEC solenoid and just being done with it. I just don't understand why people insist on using VTEC in a forced induction application. Hmm. However, I wish I had variable valve timing to play with in my car...but with more torque..Spicy <3's open diff torque steer.

i heard this the other day at school...one of our adv guys was telling one of the noobs who was asking why his car was whining (fan belt is dying) and he said "sounds like your blinker fluid is low" and the kid asked "where do i check that at?" i bout near died laughing so hard

Why is that bad?? For the most part they are in a crash...

But, with that in mind, my favorite "bad advice" was told to me by my supervisor after I crashed my cop car (Crown Vic) on ice...He said, "You should have driven the 4x4, you would have been safer on the ice..."

I yelled at him that it doesn't matter how many drive wheels you have, ice is ice, and if anything I would have crashed harder and damaged both cars worse in the 4x4 because I would have been able to accelerate faster on the snow part into the ice.

He looked at me like I had just asked him to explain quantum physics...

Right, but with four wheels turning, it can be harder to initially lose traction depending on the case.
