What's the worst automotive advice you've been given?

I understand that, but if the tires are already bad, putting them on the front will do them in very quickly

i guess the point they are making it is to have control of the car/traction which is more important how long the tires last. plus, if they are that bad, might as well get all 4.

Ah yes and then there was this other one i heard from here.
"I already have the Eibock springs but i want to get my car even lower"
-mechanic "Just cut the springs, that ought to do it."

"Let's say you drive a Nissan Altima and you notice your rear tires have 50 percent of their tread left, but the front tires are worn and need to be replaced. You go to your local tire shop, and they happily pull the fronts off and fit a set of brand new ones in their place. Is there anything wrong with this scenario? It seems logical, even the safe way to go, right?
<!--end paragraph-->

<!--begin paragraph-->We were given the keys to two identical Altimas, one with new tires on the front and half-worn tires on the rear and the other car with just the opposite front/rear setup. On a half-mile polished-concrete, wet skidpad, we approached 55 mph in the car with worn front tires. The only hint of a problem was that the steering would occasionally get light, and we found ourselves intuitively slowing down to avoid understeer (running wide of a turn).

Switching to the car with the new front/worn rears (as the tire shop suggested), we again approached 55 mph. Suddenly, the car snapped its tail out, and we were beyond oversteer and well into an off-pavement excursion. We were no longer drivers, but passengers in a car spinning out of control. We tried a second time. Even when anticipating the moment the car would break loose, there was no time to correct for the slide because it happened so fast. By the third attempt, we finally learned how to regain control of the car.

The problem is that, in reality, you don't get three chances to avoid an accident. Next time you buy two new tires, insist that they go on the rear, not the front of your car. It doesn't matter if it's an all-, front-, or rear-wheel-drive car: Always put the fresh ones on the back."

-Friend with an STi"I don't need snow tires, I have all wheel drive man"...next day"SO I ordered some snow tires last night, and I walked to school today"
-Friend"Just get the snow tires mounted on the rims you have, and the money you save on new rims can go towards altezzas" PS, he put his civic into a ditch at 60km/h and royally ****** it up....his altezzas are ok, and his winter wheels are bent...they where his stock ALL seasons with steelies....yeah, he sure saved money on snow tires:P
-"You should trade you Mazda for the new Chevy"
-Dumbass friend who ditched his Civic as posted above" Hey man, why did you give it gas when you're car got sideways? you're supposed to slam on the brakes to straighten it out"
-"Come on man, you can jump those train tracks with this car, it's fast. It'd be like a modern day dukes of hazzards...except in Kitchener" to which I replied" **** you, do it in your car, unless you're afraid something will break"....his front bumper bit the dust, and he need alignment really bad afterwards:D
-"Just throw a boost controller on man, your car came with a turbo, it's made for the boost, just crank her up to 30, come on, the guage says it goes to 30". yeah, ok ricer boy
-" you don't need a full exhaust to gain power, just the muffler man, you can hear the extra power you get"
-" you know what you need man, an Oil cooler, except set it up so that it cools the coolant instead of oil. Just put it in the front infront of your radiator, that thing is pointless anyways" after a 20 minute debate, I challenged my dumb friend, brought him out to the car, and proved the the Rad did indeed have coolant in it
-" hey man, if you ever want your car lowered, screw paying big bucks for those bad ass springs, I can cut yours for free, see I did it for mine" dumbass points to cavalier sitting very funny
-"You're car doesn't need to be clean to wax it"autozone boy
-"Why are you spending money on these guages, you should just save for a bigger turbo and a boost controller"thank you autozone boy, more useful advise
-"You can tint the front window as dark as you like, just make sure if you ever get pulled over, you didn't get tinted here" Tint guy when I asked what was legal for our province, and he said I could go as dark as I want, on any window....umm yeah, I crossed the street, and got a good job done.
-"You should scrap that wing you have, and get a nice aluminum one like mine, they weigh less, and give you more downforce man. PLus they look tighter" this from a kid driving a grand prix, with chrome hubcaps, and dents where his wing was mounted due to the wieght

I can just keep going for years...this is what you hear at the local 'tuner' place that was shown in the newspaper...umm, yeah, no wonder people complained about them, they are ******* retards...oh, and a select few came from friend of mine who think they know alot about cars...one was given an STi from his rich dad, the other drives a civic, which is still being repaired.....:D

"o come one...we'll make our own intakes, i saw some tubes at home depot the other day"

I got this from a guy at a carwash...insisting that his "s*** didn't stink":

Basically he said that "He never uses soap to wash his car" .... that soap is bad for the paint, and just strips off the protective layers. All he does is give his car a good wax, then rinse it off between waxings!! He went on to say that he had his car for 10 years, and it was "still shiny as new". I wanted to laugh my ass off right in his face...he was driving a POS Taurus that looked like s***....no gloss whatsoever!!

Instead, I sat there & Yes-manned him to death....kill 'em with kindness they say!!

LOL! (rofl)

no, don't tighten down the lug nuts, it makes it harder to get them off later!! from a tire shop!!!

When my friend asked about a violent vibration on the front of his saturn:

"Oh thats probably a loose ball joint or messed up bearing, you should be able to get home and then to a shop"

Halfway home his front tire comes flying off the car.

a guy at tire kingdom

"when i get my turbo kit, i'll be running 10's down the track"

he has a nissan sentra from god knows what year

from what i've read you shouldnt use DISH soap on cars.

and on the oil issue. the back of a bottle of mobil 1 says " compatible with conventional oil"

^^I agree....stuff like Dawn will remove your wax layers...but this guy was insisting to never use ANY type of soap...just water!

this is only true in some car. If you know how to correct for the oversteer(most msp driver), its better for the wheel to be front then the back.

1)Fill tires to maximum amount displayed on the sidewall.
2)1G DSMs aren't fast, 2G DSMs are faster.
3)Mustangs look hot dropped really low with 19s.

All were found on forums...

about that tire pressure
do you guys fill under or above what is stated.
I usually go above because it rides and handles better
is that wrong?

well u get a stiffer rider. it grips better but it bounces more too.

are you going above the recommended tire pressure, or the maximum rated pressure that's posted on the sidewall? The reason being that if your exceeding the max PSI, then you could have a blow-out. If you're referring to the recommended, then disregard. I've heard different schools on both higher & lower...I know that if it's too high or low, you'll get uneven wear. I keep mine at 32 - 35 psi.
