What's the ordering process like??

It's really tough to find the exact color combo, trim and options I want in dealer inventory. I really don't want to make too many compromises.

Are CX-5's built in Japan?

Do dealers typically take factory orders? Is it just a matter of waiting for the boat to sail? What's your experience with leadtime for orders?

We were particular about the trim we wanted and gave the dealer 3 color options. They didn't have the vehicle in stock but ended up doing a dealer trade with one 2 hours away. Within 4 business day the vehicle was ready. The dealership was more eager to do this, I assume they wanted the sale in May. We were quoted 2-3 month wait if we had to order one. As far as I know the CX5 is built and shipped from Japan.
 
It's more likely they'll offer dealer swap to get the vehicle you want. Keep in mind, the car will have miles on it that way and they will probably get upset if you back out.

No, that's how long it takes. I just got a 2016 CX-5 and for whatever reason they could not find the color/spec combo I wanted in the entire southeast US. Placed an order with the factory and basically was told I'd have to wait for up to three months.

What pissed me off is that the dealerships apparently place their orders only on one day every month. I actually ordered mine the day they placed their orders, but for whatever reason they did not include my car in their order. So I find out eight weeks later that they had only placed the order maybe 10 days earlier. Needless to say I was pissed and raised enough of a stink that they all of a sudden found just the car I wanted at a dealer in Austin, TX. The dealer trade put 200 miles on my odometer, but at least I had the car the next week...

Still, my advice to anyone considering a factory order: Make sure you understand when the dealer places the order and add it to the 8-12 weeks it takes to get the car delivered.

The Mazda CX-5 model line is relatively simple. What specifications do you want that are not readily available ?

That is precisely what I wanted (and eventually got). I had an MY15 before and when I bought that one, there were three of them sitting in the dealership lot. When I upgraded to the MY16 they were nowhere to be had. The dealer said it was a supply issue due to the newness of the car/model year and that it would get better over time...

I am ok with that, but that is not what I was told unfortunately. We would have made a different choice if we had known. They had a date of May 20th, told me + or - 3 days..... They got it but only virtually, I have a hard time understanding how the system works. For me the vin should be scan at each step to know where the car is actually, but it does not seem to be the case. It seems better in the US.
 
You can go to Mazda North American Operations website to do a national search finding a car you want. Or check the surrounding dealers' inventory in your area from their websites. Next, you can ask your dealer searching the inventory at Mazda's port of entry, which is LA, including every CX-5's still on the Pacific Ocean. This is the fastest way to order a CX-5 if you can locate one in Mazda port-of-entry's inventory as it takes only 3~4 weeks to get it with single digit miles on it. If every effort failed, then you can place a factory order which may take 6~12 weeks depending on your specs.

We placed an order for our Sonic Silver 2016 CX-5 GT AWD w/Tech in February. We wrote a $500 "refundable" check as a deposit. We did have a written agreement stating everything both sides agreed upon. They still gave us good discount. With all the incentives at time the price was $30,000, $1,855 below the MSRP. The dealer found a CX-5 we wanted on the water and ordered it so that once the car arrived to LA, Mazda North American Operations could print the window sticker and shipped it to our dealer directly. It took 23 days to get our new CX-5 with 3 miles on the odometer. Our dealer actually could get one from another dealer of a neighborhood state. We declined as we didn't like the idea of driving it over with hundreds of miles on it or trucking it over.

Apparently Mazda ships more GT's than Touring's to the US. I suggest a GT with Tech Package is your second option when you have the dealer do the search. The difference when comparing to your Touring with Moonroof/Bose and Tech Packages in MSRP is 31,855 - $30,100 = $1,755 which is only 5.8%. If you really hate these 19" wheels on GT, I believe your dealer will gladly swap less expensive 17" wheels from another Touring for free! And you do have more goodies from GT but not available on Touring such as heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, and power lumbar support on driver seat.
 
We were shopping for a Reflex Blue AWD Touring with moonroof/ Bose and under 10 miles on the odo last September. At that time the nearest one was 500+ miles away so we inquired about ordering. We were told 6-8 week delivery, maybe more. After the boat ride, unloading with thousands of other CX-5s at a US dock and the Bose installed, it arrived at the dealer with 4.7 miles on it. Almost 7 weeks for delivery, mfg. date was 2 weeks before our order. (it takes time to make a boat load)
 
^^^Thanks everyone. This is great info. The dealer I'm working with thinks he can swap with another local dealer to get the exact configuration I want. I'll know later today. I guess it's common for dealers to swap among each other in a given metro area.

Just be aware that the dealer trade will put miles on the new car. Especially this is within break-in period. Ask your dealer how many miles will be once the CX-5 arrives; if you can drive the car from that dealer who has that CX-5 (unlikely); or ask the driver not going through the highway. Truck it over is another option but it costs money. It you can wait for 3 weeks, have your dealer check Mazda's port of entry inventory.
 
Higher price and I don't want 19" rims since my goal is winter tires. (More choices in 17")

are you thinking of using your regular wheels and switch from the all season to winters twice a year? I had this idea but getting a dedicated set of steel wheels is cheaper in the long run, and you keep your oem wheels out of winter conditions. You can use 17s on the GT. in fact you can go as small as 16 on any cx5 trim.

This is what I'd do if we need snow tires here. Changing tires twice a year not only expensive, but also running the risk of scratching expensive rims. Get a dedicated set of steel wheels, or trying to find a set of OEM 17" wheels from some where is the better way to go.
 
I bought a set of 17" OEMs on Ebay for this purpose. $580 shipped to my door. They were perfect and could not be told from brand new. Put my snows (Blizzak DMV-1's) on the 17's. Now twice a year I just swap them in my garage and my CX-5 looks stock all year long.

For the $895 destination fee (or whatever it is, I know it's north of $800), I'd expect the dealer I was working with to get me the car in whatever means necessary (and pay for it) without putting miles on it. Whatever that means to them, fine, but I would not be paying extra.

I was lucky enough that my car was at a nearby dealer only about 15-20 miles away and I said it was fine to drive it over. If it had been much more than that, I'd have said no, find another way to get it to me.
