whats a good oil

just wanted to know what other people are running. i running castrol 10w30 fully synthetic. was just wondering if anyone know anything better

some people run royal purple or whatever but its too expensive for me, i run castrol sythetic 10w40

I use Royal Purple. Even though I do change my oil approx every 3-4K, I find that the Royal Purple doesn't appear to have broken down as much as other synthetics i've used.

...Which beckons the question- what other synthetics have I used? Well to that- I simply don't remember. I try to run RP as much as possible. I like it. Expensive, but I feel my engine is well protected.

IMO- it's worth giving it a shot one time. Then, once you replace it- see if it has broken down as much as the previous oil you have used. That should give you your answer...

What do you mean by broken down oil? Do you send it out for analysis?

I use 10w-30 name brand dino oil, depends on which brand is on sale. Change at
6 months/5k miles as specified in the manual for schedule 1.

I use the WalMart brand 5W-30 full synthetic. Only $17 for 5 quarts, and you get oil made by Castrol or Pennzoil or someone, I don't remember...

You can see when the oil is broken down. It is less viscous.

You can tell at the end of the oil cycle if the oil if broken down or not. Its alot thinner compared to fresh oil.

Besides you get some pretty intresting information when you get some sent for oil analysis.

I ran durablend in my P5 but it's hard to find...if you're over 75k, switch to MaxLife blend. Valvoline is good oil and doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. 5qt jug at Walmart for less than $20. Get a good filter...none of this Fram crap. There are a lot of highly recommended ones, but I like the purolator pureone filter. It's cheaper and has a very high filtration rate.

Redline 5w30. Use it in both my protege and my wifes 4runner. Expensive? Yes. It costs $54 to do an oil change in my car with a K&N oil filter.

I use Valvoline High Mileage Synthetic Blend 5w-30 (I've got 122k miles on my P5) and it's worked great so far. And I use K&N oil filters. Though I've heard OEM oil filters are the best. (shrug)

Pennzoil platnium seems to be a favorite of many on bobistheoilguy.com forums. I use it and have been very happy, It's a true grade 4 sythetic unlike mobil 1 which is a grade 3.

mobil 1 10w30 synthetic with a k&n filter. $12 for filter from protege garage and $27 for 5qt jug from walmart. but only use 3.7 qt for the change so its not terrible. plus i change at 10k intervals. recently changed and the oil was grit free and smooth.

^^^ I'm pretty sure the K&N oil filters from Autozone are in stock and $10.

IMO best oils are as follows:

#1 - Redline Oil - absolute best

#2 - Royal Purple - i think its just as expensive or maybe a touch less but its nearly as good and it removed a grind in my transmission from my 94 civic that i thrashed HARD nearly every day

#3 - Mobil1 if you are not looking to spend alot for an oil change

VERY wrong. There is a big difference in filters. They are not just 'empty cans'. And to those paying 10-20 for a K&N, Onlinemazdaparts.com has OEM (best filter, period) for 7$.
