what year engine will fit my car

Hi, I have to replace the engine in my car which is a 2008 Mazda 3 sport five speed 2.3. My question is what years will fit, salvage yards say 2006- 2010 but can I put anything older in it like 2005 2004 3003 and if so what would the difference be between years.

I am not sure just what years will fit but I stayed with the third letter in my vin. Most will fit but dig around you might be better staying with the Duratek 2.3 but I decided that I wanted a little more horse power and something newer. From what I read my car could handle anything from 2006 to 2012 but don't quote me however that being said mine came from a 2011. There were a few changes to be done to the engine but I think that with the 2.3 Duratek there are less to do. I am happy with my swap no more Mazda engine and it purrs like a kitten with no check engine lights and best of all engine with 30,000 kilometers ( 19,000 miles) cost me 400 bucks.
