I felt with the tech options, the GT was a good bang for the buck.
Styling is nice too.

First a car that fits me and my back trouble. That ment a crossover or bigger. Then it had to handle that ment CX-5. Zoom Zoom is real.

Value for money.

There are vehicles that do many things as good or better but cost a lot more, Cx5 is a good balance. The Diesel engine and handling set it apart from other similar priced vehicles.

Same for me the diesel engines torque, and decent handling for a SUV, and AWD.

Above all a car just has to look and feel good inside and out. This little SUV is simply the best looking one on the road.

Bigger size then the previous car, looks, drivability mostly and better MPGs help also.

Depends what is it being compared to but mostly a combination of appearance, handling and reliability worked for Mazda against close competition by CR-V (hated the looks and CVT), Escape (backseat looked cheap and reliability reports), and Forester (lost on looks and somewhat handling).

Had been swooning over the CX-5 while driving my Tribute around for years since the 2013 came out. Test drove one of the original 2013s with no real seriousness but didn't care for the 2.0L engine.

A combination of getting side-swiped while on the way home one day, requiring the Tribute to make another trip to the body shop, and coming up on 125k miles (and some more $$ maintenance) finally pushed me to get my 2015. After a test drive with the 2.5L, it totally sealed the deal. The Mazda promotional 0% interest really attracted me too. Really didn't seriously consider any other CUV/SUV.

I am still shopping as my Escape nears 200K (183,000 now) miles. While I miss traditional boxy SUV styling (better utility and visibility), my main draw is the CX-5 still offers a manual transmission.
I would probably go Forester for utility, visibility, and more traditional SUV styling, but the oil-consumption problem is show-stopper.
