What should a stock Mazdaspeed 6 sound like?...

Hey guys,
I just got this 06 mazdaspeed 6...ive had plenty of turbo cars before and am not a novice, but am looking for advice...

Under boost and only under boost, instead of hearing just engine normal noise (as most stock turbo cars), I can hear the turbo. but instead of sounding like a high pitched whistle, it sounds like a raspy rattle/vibration, almost as though a heatshield is loose. this ONLY happens under boost, which makes it really hard to trace. Is that what a stock mazdaspeed 6 is supposed to sound like? I will be testing for boost leaks, its all i could think of. On the freeway under boost it almost sounds like a plastic bag flapping under the car...

Also, immediately behind the turbo, going into the firewall, there is a tube, black and about 1/4" in diameter. What does it do?!

Thanks!
Abe

never heard of this problem before. are there any aftermarket parts on the car? almost sounds like the plastic skid plate might be loose and flapping. do you still have a warranty on the car? if so have mazda check it out

also now thinking about it a little more it could be your turbo inlet pipe being loose or something. the stock tip is known for being very loose.

Car is 100% stock. With the windows down it sounds like a exhaust leak when boost hits...but man is it quick. I have a mazdaspeed miata and it aint quite so quick :D

This is something I've not seen or heard of either. It kind of sounds like something in the stock air box being loose to me.

I have to say that my turbo spool on the bottom end doesn't sound the way I would expect either...kinda raspy. But it sounds great on the top end.

I've put quite a bit of time into trying to figure out why, but haven't found anything yet.

I have a PG TIP on order. So I'll see if it changes after that's installed.

The dealership told me it sounded normal to them (of course). Unfortunately I've never been able to compare against another MS6 or MS3.

Im in socal. The more i drive it, the more i think its an exhaust leak that seaps past the seals at boost. Sounds perfect at idle and part throttle, only makes this noise when boost hits. Is there a common spot that i should check for exhaust leaks?

I thought of other ways to describe the noise, it sounds like:

A plastic bag caught in the wind
A piece of paper being torn x100
An M3 at full throttle (raspy)

Thanks guys :)

Have you examined the stock airbox to see that everything is secure? It almost sounds like you've got a funny leak on the intake side of the turbo.

Hey. Had the same sound/problem. (under boost/load) Took it to the dealer. No problem replicating sound. Dealer replaced driveshaft. (warranty) No noise since the fix. (Car is bone stock, for now) 50k miles

Problem solved! one of the bolts on the exhaust flange near the cat fell off. So it was tight, but not tight enough to hold pressure under boost. Now the car is as quiet as a toyota camry :)
