what mods will increase fuel economy

a lighter foot will certainly bring you back into the 30s where you SHOULD be if you do 90% freeway

Put in a set of NGK Iridium plugs and help the breathing (cai and cat or axel back) it will help a lot - and keep your foot out of it.......

Fock that, I have NGK Iradium plugs in my P5 I put in a month ago and it didn't do jack shiet.

I replaced my rear brake pads with the P/N listed in the TSB. My fuel economy went from 25mpg (highway - usually 75mph) to 28-30.

Some things you may want to consider:

Replace your air filter - (what 02ESwBoost said)
Make sure you have the correct tire pressure (what Natey said)
Drive with the windows closed
Replace your spark plugs
Using AC really increases fuel consumption
I found that if I use the 91 Octane fuel, I get better fuel economy
Narrower profile tires (yupnope)

brake pads help? how?
There was a problem with some P5s where the rear brakes were dragging, causes low fuel economy. If you go in and complain about poor gas mileage, that's one thing they check and fix under a Technical Service Bullentin (TSB). A TSB is not like a recall, so if you're out of warranty, they you pay. Unfortunately, my wife and I complained prior to the TSB being issued. The stealership said nothing was wrong and that is was probably our driving habits. 100k miles later, I change the pads and my fuel economy increases.

You could try that metal thing you stick in your intake 'as seen on tv'. AFAIK there are no aftermarket mods specifically designed at fuel economy. The manufacturer does the best job with those numbers in most cases. But as others have said...

Remove the roof rack if you have one
Don't pick up heavy hotties
Don't drive with the A/C on
Keep the windows closed
Keep your speed between 40-60mph
Keep your RPMs below 3500
Keep your tires properly inflated
Shift to a lower gear as you slow down (this revs the engine and turns of the injectors...if you put it in neutral the injectors will use gas to keep the car at idle)
Use your entire gas tank down to at least 1/4 tank
Buy a set of narrow steel rims and tires (take a look at the wheels on an Echo!)

I get 31mpg consistantly and I drive 45mph back and forth to work every day bouncing between 4th and 5th gear.

i get 30-32mpg City/Frwy combined on my P5( thats on a 90 mile commute /day). I have the basic mods. Keep your tire pressure 34f/34r and see from there. i think 26mpg is pretty damn low unless if you have a heavy foot.

man ur talkin bout fuel economy, i used to have a BMW 740i, i spent maybe $60 a week on that boat, and even worse than that i used to have a jeep cherokee V8 that thing drank gas like it was breathing air, i love my p5, i spend like $30 a week.

ANY engine mod essentially increases efficiency, however when you've got that extra ability, you generally use it, so in the end, you really don't gain anything. I tried to be as scientific as possible when adding my intake, mostly notice it on the freeway, and the difference is minimal but I'd say 1-2mpg increase. it's not much, but it IS something. Exhaust didn't really show any noteworthy increase or decreas in mileage (even after I got over the thrill of revving it all the time to hear it growl) I've seen a couplefew posts of guys who've done some internal mods as well as camwork and reported increased economy. Again, that kind of thing essentially increses engine efficiency, so it CAN, under similar conditions produce better results (again this all depends on your right foot)

Prettymuch there's 2 main factors "sporty" low gearing which prettymuch every manufacturer uses anymore due to "perception of power" how people will judge a car's power by "being able to pull that hill at the speedlimit in 5th". Aside from that, it's mazda's overly-rich tuning which is what gives our cars such excellent longevity that REALLY shoots you in the foot (or wallette) when it comes to the pumps. Unfortunately, these are pretty expensive things to change, and believe me if I could will my car to grow a 6th gear, it'd have 7 bynow. I'd imagine that taller gearing alone would show an increase of 5mpg on the highway. If you ever go on a long trip and have a couple extra minutes try driving at 55mph instead of 70 and see what happens. As far as leaning out your mixture. mmm... I'd love to have full control. Better mileage, more power, how can you argue with that? of course the couplegrand pricetag is quite prohibitive.

All that being said, we're really pretty well off compared to many other vehicles on the road. Apart form the main things ppl've mentioned, but trust me I know where you're coming from. My civic used to be able to push 40mpg, or as poor as upper-mid 30's. In the end, it's all in driving style.
