what is this?

alright the other day i was just looking under my hood for the hell of it, and i was looking at that vaccum hose routing diaphragm on the bottom of the hood, there is a "boost sensor" thing all the way to the left of it, lol i know this is probably going to sound stupid, but what is that? I drive a 2003 protege ES 2.0 Manual trans. byt the way.

my guess is it reads the level of vac in the manifold? who knows.
