Perrin, HiBoost, etc. What is the best FMIC that doesn't cost a s*** load of money.....just wondering since the Perrin is $1200.(help)

i would suggest going with the perrin. I had the impression that the mental addiction kit i got was pretty good.... now looking back theres some things about it i don't like. They don't make that one anymore anyway. Perrin offers the biggest core and the most direct piping of any of the IC kits built for our cars.

The Ion is the most common FMIC, and it allows you tu run a larger radiator like the one found in the N/A version of the protege or upgrade with a huge AWR ;)

I guess it's the best choice for the daily drivers, and at a quite descent price !

You lose the bumper support with the Perrin IIRC.

this is true. If you search i'm sure you can find many big huge long debates about whether or not this is a cause for concern.

I'm not gonna try and influence that decision, the honest answer is nobody really knows if the bumper support or that big mass of metal (which also has a mini-support if you will) protects better in a crash. Its a big difference for some people, others could care less.

Agreed.
Not debating, just letting the OP know.

Anyone with the ION (since it's so common.. I had no idea :P) care to enlighten me as to how they routed the piping? I know cuts have to be made, but was just wondering where... specifically the hot pipe.

Hi-Boost is probably the easiest install and one of the more common ones. If you look in the For Sale section it seems like there is at least one type of FMIC and piping up for sale at all times. The hi-boost will definitely be fine for those numbers and there is no cutting or removing of the bumper support required. The only bid negative is the pipe routing which makes it impossible to upgrade to a full lenght radiator, but unless your really looking to push crazy power this may be the best, easiest way to go

I don't have one but did install it on a buddy's car. All you have to cut is an unneeded piece of metal. We actually just bent it out of the way. IIRC it was just behind the air ducts of the front bumper.

I used to have one.

You need to cut non-structural sheet metal on the driver side of the car as well as a hole pretty much in line with the right fog light on the passenger side. The passenger side is tougher since the AC lines are right there.

so pretty much behind the passenger side fog light? interesting. The washer fluid tank doesn't get in the way?

thank you so much.. that second picture explains it perfectly, hopefully it'll work with my non-ION intercooler since that's how my piping is routed right now, I'm just going underneath the radiator support since I didn't know there was an easy place to cut.

edit: theoretically my hiboost core with replaced entanks intercooler isn't too different:
