Does anyone know what service code 55R stands for? I'm having a pretty heated exchange with my dealer regarding a botched oil change (we're leaking... Again). They are blaming a gasket that is a known issue.. I can't find any info about a recall or faulty part. I'm basically curious to know if they replaced the faulty gasket the first time they changed the oil (it's not listed in the paperwork) like they are claiming now, or if they've done anything at all. There's obviously more to the story, but I'm so mad right now I'm spitting nails.

The code 55R is probably irrelevant here. What matters is there is an issue with the drain plug gasket on the SkyActiv engine. Mine's leaked a couple of times and I now check it on a semi-regular basis (I do my own service work) to make sure it's not leaking. I don't know the answer, but I suspect the sealing washer they use (which is quite thin) is not up to the job consistently. The one they use on the Miata is about twice the thickness and I have used the same one for over 100K miles on my wife's car with nary a leak.
I'm really upset about this. It's cost me quite a bit of time this week, including time at work which I find to be both inconvenient and professionally embarrassing. I dispatch for law enforcement, so any time I have to deal with personal business at work it's time I'm not doing my job. I'm about mad enough to tell my dealer to go jump in a lake at this point! I pay a premium for new cars because I value reliability and quality. I don't feel like I am getting either of those qualities right now.

I never had a problem with leakage, but I changed my plug to a Fumoto valve fairly early on. No leakage and a cleaner oil change.
Thanks for the tip on the valve - I will look into it once the current headache is over. I want to fall back in love with my CX5, but right now I just want to trade it in and never deal with Mazda again. I had a 2003 Protege for 10 years and it never gave me a moment's trouble. Really wish I had it back - it was paid off (many moons ago) and it never leaked anything!

I suspect this problem may be more common than we know. The plastic underbody panels tend to be a perfect place for weeping oil to collect and can hold a fair amount before it starts to leak out on the garage floor. First time it happened to mine, it did not become apparent until a thousand or so miles after the oil change. Ultimately, the Fumoto valve may be the best answer to this problem.

Without going into the whole Saga of My Displeasure with the Dealership of Doom, I'd like to encourage anyone else who has this particular problem to report it to Mazda USA's Customer Experience Team. If it really is a "known issue" as far as the service departments are concerned, they don't seem to be passing that information on to Mazda. They can't do a recall if they don't know about the problem - and my dealership in particular appears to have not documented it at all. Call Mazda USA - I still want to believe that they want to help!

While I don't disagree with you advice in post #8, you need to understand that this is not the type of issue that recalls are based on. There needs to be a "safety" component, and an engine oil leak does not qualify. What there should be by now is a TSB (technical service bulletin) which deals with known issues and provides guidance to dealers on how to deal with those issues. This appears to be one of those things that, for whatever reason, Mazda corporate has not been made aware of to the degree necessary to warrant their involvement and TSB issuance.
Whatever the correct terminology is, the fact of the matter still is as I stated... They don't appear to know about it at Mazda USA, while its a known issue here, and at least at my dealer. I know it's a fairly inexpensive fix, but it could lead to real problems down the road for owners who aren't aware. So if it happens to you, call. If it hast happened to you (yet) keep a close eye on your parking spot (hahaha a punny!) after every oil change!
Would a Miata crush washer work on the CX-5's oil drain bolt? Not sure if they are even a crush washer though.

Mazda doesn't use crush washers on the drain plug, although many here seem to think so. They use a simple flat aluminum washer. Thickness varies from model to model.
