you wont be messed up by not having one but they only help. by tuning your car to respond to your mods you will only be taking full advantage of the money you put out. I was told and it makes perfect sense to me that the ECU is programmed for the stock parts on the car. when you add aftermarket parts that work better than the stock ones they will not mess things up but the ECU will only use them up to the performance level of the stock parts. by tuning with a piggyback or afc you can access all of the benefits of the aftermarket mods.

yea alot of shops accept cash...
or they dont do the visual inspection. as long as u dont have a CEL and they dont do visual, they might turn a blind eye (and nose). so realize since its federal, if a trooper wants to be a doodie head, he can ticket u on the road if u dont have one.

Naw...emissions check every 2 years ftl. Just got my notice thursday, and now I gotta get a cat installed. Just got a stock msp midpipe so now I gotta fab up something.

Last time I went they just tossed the OBDII hookup on there, no visual inspection, nothing.
If it fails, I've still got the stocker. An hour or two's work and all of a sudden oh, I passed!
Can they fine for catless straightaway, or do they just go "get the system fixed so it passes"?
I bet I could still sell the resonator as a cat, albeit one that "isn't working so well". Most of the guys at emissions shops don't seem to have it all together....
you can also just weld a heat shield on the top and bottom so it looks like a cat. It might not pass the sniffer test but if they dont do it your golden if u remove the CEL.

Illinois only sniff test's cars before 96, in most county's, some don't even require emissions, like Dekalb county, where I went to college.
after 96 it's OBDII only, and they test your gas cap. No visual what so ever!!

i drove her for the first time in almost a week today.
as far as md inspection, when i went, they never checked the exhaust or anything like that. as long as you dont throw a cel you should be fine. these cars arent that old, so they have no reason to test or anything like that

They only do visual testing in my area. Had to weld a heat shield around the exhaust on my Evo and my Dad's STi to pass.
Wait....So you guys have an Evo, STi and MSP....Nice!!!

I have an MSP and got an Evo to replace the MSP. The Evo's power is amazing but it's either on or off and it's pretty much a straight line car. I think I have more fun with the MSP so might just sell the Evo. Either way, money is kind of tight right now so I need to sell one of them asap.
