What have you done to your Miata today?

It's not all that hard to change out the headunit, but if you want to keep the stock speakers and amp you will need to get a line converter to hook it into the stock amp. Since all the signal processing is done in the BOSE amp, why would you want to that anyway? It would essentially sound the same, but on the upside you'd have the modern technology (satellite radio, USB drives, iPod, etc...)

However, if you hooked the aftermarket headunit directly to the speakers you could get better sound quality, but should make sure the head unit can handle it. The BOSE speakers are .5 Ohms while most* aftermarket speakers are 4 Ohms. I can explain this WAYYYY in depth to the point I think only Phen would get, but let's just say less resistance = more amp = More load on the headunit.
Well my headunit is being finicky, and that's why I would be replacing it. It would be nice to have USB connectivity. I used a tape deck adapter and that worked for a couple days and then the tape deck crapped out.

So the signal processing that happens at the headunit wouldn't be able to skew the sound curves at all? The stock HU can send more/less bass and more/less treble to the amps.

Wait Peach... Did you just hook it directly in? Like... sent an already amplified signal into the BOSE amplifier?

I did, my only "issue" is that my max tolerable volume is 3. The sound is OK, a little hum when playing something but it doesn't bother me. When I have some extra cash I might get the speakers and a small amp, but I have other things to get before that

Lol, that sounds like a slight issue...

I personally guarantee that all of your Miatas sound better than mine! I only have the two speakers in the doors which are just https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)cheap Pioneer speakers. With the top down I have to have it so loud that there is no point in having anything that resembles a good sounding system :)

I'm having an issue that's increasing in frequency

I turn the key to on and hear what sounds like a pressure surge spike through the lines in the engine bay (almost like a blow off valve) and the fuel pump kick on for .5-1 second and go silent (try to turn over and it cranks REALLY slow and doesn't turn over)

turn key to off then back on, same sound (Same slow cranking no turn over)

turn key off, then back on and fuel pump runs constant and a clicking sound under the dash (fuel pump doesn't shut off, keeps running)

Turn key off, turn back on, i hear fuel pump turn on for 5 seconds and then i turn the key to start it eventually fires up but runs REALLY rough, almost like it's on 3 cylinders and then I smell fuel very strongly and then the car levels off and is fine

I get to where i'm going, shut it down, and process repeats every time i have to start the car now

i'll try to remember to get video when i go to leave for work if that'll help

My Miata is an LS. Its very basic. I dont even have tweeters. 2 tiny speakers in the door with a shitastic headunit.. sounds horrid. LOL...

Two tiny and horrid 5x7s I might add

Speakers before amp. The "hum" you are getting is from sending an amplified signal into another amplifier. You are essentially amplifying everything, including noise.

Lol, that sounds like a slight issue...

Slight is an understatement. lol

I've got a decent amount at the house. You still need the garage to do the install?

Yes please. Next weekend work?

Crutchfield recommends using this when installing an aftermarket system into a Bose equipped car

Then again, reading the reviews, it's lacking an amplifier turn-on and has two extra unused channels

Wow... That thing is just a brick with 4 variable resistors in it. All it does is lower the amount of power from your aftermarket headunit into the Bose amp. You can spend about 20-30 bucks more for a good set of two-ways or decent component set and just bypass the Bose amp. It will sound a lot better too.

I can see that, but it's tolerable since my volume won't go past 3 (4 maybe 5 on the highway with the top down). I had an mini Alpine amp on the 3 that did a pretty good job, Evan has it now but I'd rock another one, especially since it's pretty small.

Yeah that Kenwood that Shalon (imjustagirl) is getting is a 2 channel amp. Perfect for a miata and it is on sale for 60 bucks over at sonicelectronix.

Mmmmm, cheesecake :D

I have my answer.

This one is the 60 dollar one. It is normally a 150 dollar amp, but it is on sale. It's only 2 channels, but puts out 60 Watts RMS @ 4 Ohms.

Edit: Ok.. I did some research and I did not realize how small this thing was. That is actually pretty bad ass.

If I had my choice, I'd go JL Audio for amps. I've had the same 500/1 swapped into each of my cars since I was in high school.. It's over 11 years old and still rocks out!

my passenger side door speaker is in the crapping out phase so your sound is probably better than mine lol. When I first got the car it had some problems but it worked for the most part well then would sound bad some times, not that side sounds bad all the time. Since the SE had bose system I would try to get the right replacement. I did love the way it sounded when it worked right. But first I have to pay a fine :(
