What have you done to your CX-5 today?

My local dealer sent me a coupon for a thirty dollar oil change with a 56 point inspection. Of course he found 5k worth of work I needed done. I couldn't get over the fact they charge 43 dollars for one spark plug. The trouble with dealerships is the overhead they have to pay for.
I used mazda swag to buy my spark plugs... https://www.mazdaswag.com/spark-plugs looks like they have gone up since I ordered back in April.. very simple job..literally no more than 45 minutes..

Finally took my wife's 2019 CX-5 Signature (26k miles) in for the TSB 01-001/23 repair. We'll see how that goes.

In the meantime, they put me 2025 CX-50 2.5 S Premium loaner. I don't know how I feel about the CX-50. I like the panoramic moonroof. Not a fan of the split center console cover. Nice to see the hood struts comes with it but almost feels like driving my 2023 CX-30.

Anyway they left the sticker in the car so here it is for those of you interested. Also, you would think they would hide or secure the GPS fleet tracking module.

Hard to imagine anyone would mistake a CX-50 for a Cx-30 since the former is much closer in size to the CX-5 and the latter is absolutely dinky inside. Last time I took my CX-5 in for service, they gave me a Cx-30 to run an errand in and every time I went to look over my shoulder to the left I kept hitting my head on the top of the door frame!
 
It's probably because the 50 is similar to the 30 in design and build, whereas the CX-5 is different.

If it wasn't for the outside, it sure feel like I'm driving my daily driver, which is the CX-30. Plus even the placement of the cupholder on this is better than the CX-5.

A lot of people complain that they can't put their giant Stanley/Yeti/etc there or it will block the climate controls.

did driver side control arm so now both fronts are done. I forgot how much of a pain it is to torque the bolt next to the transmission pan.

Do you have any warranty to cover this repair? If you don’t, this can be expensive. You could argue with the MNAO to cover some repair cost as your 2019 CX-5 has only 26K miles. It’s a design flaw by Mazda hence they modified the exhaust manifold to prevent this problem happening. Keep us posted.

It’s the first time I saw this TSB though:

TSB No.: 01-001/23 Poor Acceleration and Rough Idling with DTC P030X:00

“This is caused by the variable valve in the exhaust manifold seizing and causing the exhaust port to become hot and the
exhaust valve seat to wear unevenly, resulting in compression leakage. To eliminate this concern, the design of the
exhaust manifold has been modified.“


And this’s the first time I learned the exhaust manifold on the 2.5T had been modified in production after 2020 MY CX-5.

I remember there were a couple of cases reported here in early days that the entire engine of the 2.5T got replaced under warranty due to the loss of compression in a cylinder. Now only the exhaust manifold needs to be replaced with an updated version if similar problem happens again. $$$ savings.

Since it affects cylinder compression I’d assume that “valve” is the exhaust valve for the cylinder.

It says a variable valve in the exhaust manifold, and it says the exhaust manifold design has been changed. That's completely different than a valve in the cylinder head.

2.5T has variable valve timing on exhaust valves. But after I re-read the sentence of the TSB, I believe you’re right.

I remember my previous 1974 Chevy Impala has a “ turnable round valve” in each exhaust manifold which will get stuck all the time due to the red hot heat. The valve is closed when the engine is cold, then both are turned open by a spring when the spring get hot. I assume it’d heat up the manifold much faster for emission purpose, like those air injection ports on the exhaust manifolds. These components caused all kind of problems and I eventually replaced both exhaust manifolds with a pair from a 1973 Chevy which didn’t have these “features”.

I believe the variable valve in 2.5T’s exhaust manifold is similar for the purpose.

They were commonly called "heat risers" and were commonly used on all manner of Detroit engines back in the day.

It took literally close to 2 months going back and forth with Mazda USA and the Dealership.

It was going to be $6k+ for the repair and Mazda USA approved a goodwill out-of-warranty repair but the $$$, which was not even half the repair cost, was a joke. This is where the dealership came in and we agreed on the $$$.

Once I get it back, hopefully next week, we will see if the dealership lives up to that said $$$ amount.
