what do my fellow ms3 drivers do in the winter time?

Has anyone here tried the BFGoodrich Super Sport A/S in dry, wet and snow? I'm curious because if it handles snow well, it might be worth considering since the cost is about equal to dedicated snow tires on steelies.

There are no all-season tires that will handle nearly as well as dedicated winter tires [period]

store the MS3, and buy a winter beater.. this is why I have an 84 volvo 242 turbo

I know alot of people do this but I don't get it. You guys act like the ms3 is a ferrari or a vette. It's a $20,000 fwd car it's perfect for winter. That's one of the reasons I got a new car so I wouldn't have to drive a beater in the winter when it would really hurt if it broke down. I put my snow tires on the MS3 and I have no worries about getting stranded on the side of the highway since it's brand new.

Can I get on of those for the cost of a set of winters?

probably not, but you can get something else maybe an 88 integra with 216,000 miles. thats what I got for $600 8 years ago.I got 30,000 miles out of it, and it lasted for 3 years

Just ordered a set of 17's with snow tires from discounttire. There's a store near my work and I stopped in there at lunchtime. They told me there is a $100 winter tire/wheel sale through tomorrow only and if you use their credit card (which has 0% APR currently) then you get another $100 off!

I picked up:

MB wheels Gear wheel
General Altimax Artic snow tires

all for under $800 installed and OTD after both the rebates.

Here's the wheel I picked:

The order will go out on Monday AM and should be in by Wed/Thurs next week. I'll post pics once I get them installed (probably not until closer to Halloween time)

Got my Zoom-Zoom magazine in the mail today. P62 has an article on winter tires:

"Contrary to popular belief, tires labeled "all season" aren't ready to face the worst of winter - especially if you're heading to the Rockies or the Midwest. All-season tires cannot deliver the performance needed for even the mildest winter conditions, let alone the most severe."

Also: "Only winter tires provide the proper tread design, pliable tread compound and sufficient tread depth."

very very cool. Don't forget about the wheel sensors!

I am one of the cupcakes who puts their favorite car up for winter. The salting of roads out my way destroys cars. i have lived in western NY for about 35 years. rust and snow piles and such just beat a car up. My MazdaSpeed is set up for warm weather and dry roads. And my experience with winter packages would have a dedicated snow tire. Blizzak are quite good and I have heard good about Nokian. A narrow and taller tire with a smaller rim diameter I would use on the Mazda. The crossover no matter how good are a compromise and unless upfront cash money is an issue i would dedicate to summer or winter tires if you have real winters like we up here do. Hey are you snow guys going to run the Rally style mud flaps? that would be cool and protect the paint a little. yes i also have an old Volvo for winters! ha

I spent the last 3 winters doing that with my old MR2. 2 winters she was outside and covered, 1 was in a friends workshop. Last winter she was in my garage and my old Protege MP3 was outside. It really sucked for me to have a car in the garage and to still have to clear out snow in the mornings, which is partially why I consilidated down to 1 car. In the future when we've got a bit more $ and a bigger house with a bigger garage I'll consider another summer only car. For now though, 1 car, 2 sets of wheels/tires is good for me!

I don't have any mud flaps on mine. Just the ones on the front side of the wheels that are there from factory. My buddy pointed that out the other day how we have mud flaps in front of the wheels.(shrug)

Has anyone had any trouble with letting the TPMS light stay illuminated on the IP for the whole winter tire season?

Any issues with light burning out? Or triggering another PCM action / warning light / ABS issue?

Those aren't mud flaps... they control air flow around the wheels.

That's a good deal. I tried to reproduce today at my local Discount Tire and couldn't even come close. So I instead pulled the trigger on a set of 16's from Tire Rack that I've been considering for a while. I also ended up going with General Altimax Artic's. There isn't a ton of information out there on the Generals since they are fairly new to the market, but apparently they are the same tire as Gislaved (a European Continental brand) Nordfrost 3's. All information I could find on both tires was very positive and I like the fact that that they are priced very aggressively.

so how bad are the stock tires when it comes to just cold temperatures? I am going into "winter" soon here in central florida, and will be doing a road trip up the east coast for thanksgiving. I am not anticipating extremely foul weather but you never know. Am I courting disaster with the stockers?

The traction/grip of the stockers will suffer in cold temperatures (<40*F or so) because the grippy compound hardens up, and since they have flat, solid rubber tread blocks they will not grip snowy and slick roads.

For one road trip up north though, just be careful. If it gets very cold or you encounter any snow, just be aware that the tires can let go pretty suddenly. I haven't ever driven with summer tires in the winter on a freeway or anything, but I did try to climb a small hill in a snow storm on my way to a garage to swap on my winters one year, and it was unreal. Any amount of throttle and the tires would break loose!

There is a good chance you will die. soft summer tires have no tolerance for cold. How far north will you travel? If you are going to Georgia you might be ok in winter. if you are going to Maine Winter, which is further North you could die. and you really should rent a car. just kidding about the dying part. but only kinda. if you have not driven up our way, I would hate to see folks have a bad experience. Error on the safe side on your trip imo
