Chains are a little excessive, studded is a better option if you really need to go that far. Tire Rack will stud winter tires for you at $15 a tire when you purchase studable winter tires.

I agree, I don't like chains either. That said, I live at the base of Siskiyou Pass on I-5 that regularly requires chains on the car and more frequently requires that you carry chains in the car (or you maybe get a ticket).
