What did you pay for your CX-5?

Current email negotiated price for a FWD GT w/tech from a dealer in Phoenix:

Discounted Price: $29,704
Govt Fee's: $484.84
Doc Fee: $399
Data Dots: $268
Taxes: $2,613.95

Final Out The Door Cost: $33,469.79

Tax in AZ is awful - 8.8-10.1% in most places here. According to Edmunds the price for the car is right in line (just below) the true market value. Obviously the $399 doc fee and the $268 for data dots pads that price. Sales tax and Vehicle license tax also hurt quite a bit.

rcs914: I suggest you "get outa town" (Tucson, that is), get quotes from other dealers and ignore Edmunds and their "true market value" (translated: "best guess on our part") price. You shouldn't be paying more than invoice for the car and certainly not $667 in fantasy fees. Bottom line: You can do better!

2014 Touring w/Bose pkg & Tech pkg

I just picked up my 2014 CX 5 FWD touring w/Bose & Tech pkg this weekend.
MSRP $2825.00
Invoice (True car) $27,401.00
Purchase price $26,262.00 Cash
N0 trade in
Mis dealer fees $109.00

I love the car so far. I am getting great mileage, 27.1 mpg combined city/hwy driving(70% city 30% hwy). There is not a lot of difference between the 2.0 and the 2.5 on flat stretches but you can tell the difference when you are pulling a hill. I had a great buying experience, He gave his bottom line. I gave him my bottom line...and we met somewhere in the middle. A win-win.

That's a great deal!

Now this is what I like to hear. This is exactly my scenario. A Touring package, paying in cash with no trade-in. Very useful information.

To be honest I shopped the dealer as much as I did the car. I monitored their inventory on the net daily...made a visit to the dealership after three weeks of monitoring to see if in fact they had the cars I was interested in(2013 vs 2014,Gt vs Touring). Talked to a sales person to kind of get a feel for the dealership's style of selling. Once I got there(over 60 miles away) I spent about a half hour checking out the cars as well as seeing how busy they were as well as seeing how many sales people they had working the floor(only two sales people working very low key sales approach) . I didn't test drive anything as I knew that I was going to be contacting the internet sales manager and dealing with them directly. When I got home I e-mailed them...told them that I was l interested in a couple of their cars...that cost would the determining factor and that I would be choosing between a Mazda and a Honda CRV. I asked them if they were willing to sell at invoice (a bare bones min) and that I was looking for a dealership that I could make future purchases from. I got an e-mail back and that they would be willing to sell the cars in question at below invoice(they had a bad sales month in January and February was starting out slow). I set up an appointment for last Saturday. My wife thought that I was crazy for traveling all that way when there were four dealers closer. I had to tell her to trust me, the dealership that we were traveling to had high inventory and slow sales.
When I got to the dealership I was greeted by the same sales person that had waited on me the week before. I told her that I had an appointment with the internet/fleet manager. She gave me a eat s... and die look and begrudgingly went to get him. We didn't waste any time, we went into his office he gave what he told me was his bottom line. I told him that I needed to put more distance between his bottom line and the Honda price. My goal was $1000.00 under dealer invoice. I gave him a price...he muttered lets see how ugly this is going to be,and as he was inputting it on his computer I briefly saw his dealer hold back. I knew then that I was not going to reach my target price. We settled on a price of $770 under invoice with very little dealer fluff($109.00 transfer fees. ect).

So what would you ask off for a 2013 Touring or Grand Touring?

It's a model year older AND it's a lesser output engine. Of which the last one is a meaningful difference

My first post (having just picked up a new 2014 white FWD GT CX-5)! Thanks to everybody on the forum for sharing their experiences, really helped me while making the purchase. Paid US$27,799 for the CX-5 with cargo cover + auto dimming mirror (invoice price - $400). Looking forward to fun times with the car!

Considering people are getting below invoice on the 2014's in some areas I would try for below invoice on the 2013. I think you might be able to manage a few hundred below invoice.

Just began talking price with my dealer yesterday. Boy, they don't seem to want to come down at all. Not serious negotiations as yet, but he strongly hinted they might come down to maybe $400 below MSRP. No dealer fees. But below or at invoice? He said no way. Which is consistent with what Edmunds is reporting. Around $400-$500 below MSRP.

I was at only a $500 difference between the 2013 and the 2014. The 2013 had the pearl white otherwise the same. For the depreciation alone that made 2014 a no-brainer. Add a larger engine(27/city 36/hwy so far) Smart City Brake Support, and improved Blue Tooth features, my choice was easy.

Does anyone know if the Costco auto buying program allows dealers to offer a below invoice price but then add sneaky dealer fees?

Even with me buying below invoice I still had to pay more than a lot of folks due to the 8% CA sales tax.

I have been watching this thread for a couple of weeks and also have negotiated on both a 2014 Touring and a 2014 GT/with Tech (which I am picking up tomorrow) and this is my take. You can in fact get a few hundred under invoice (Edmunds is spot on regarding this price) from a large volume dealer. I was at $500 under, some claim more but $1000 or anything close to that is pure BS. People need to add back the dealer profit items to their sales price, geez they even markup transfer and registration fees in some cases. Dealers do not lose money on new cars sales, the margins are skinny in a lot of cases but they will never sell below their actual cost after considering add allowances, mfr incentives and holdbacks. I have never been a dealer but I financed plenty of them at a point in my life. I don't think things have changed much over the years. If financing is important and you are happy with the overall deal go for it, same with trade ins. Cash deals are the only transactions that are comparable. People worry too much about someone getting a so called "better" deal, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't but I would not lose sleep over it. After a few years of depreciation the $500 someone saved on the front end after buying a new car will seem insignificant. I can tell from personal experience things like going from the Touring to the GT w/Tech for an additional $5K will evaporate in a heart beat, but I still like the fun factor.

I'm torn on a deal.

Getting a quote for a 2014 Touring FWD with bose and tech package.
msrp: $28,025
invoice (kbb): $27,032
quote: $25,700
Out the door: $28,100.

Problem is that the car is not on their lot and they won't bring it there until I can give them a "refundable" deposit. It's a great deal, but I want to see the car in person before giving any info or money.

Thoughts?

Great price but chances are this car is at a dealership near you. If it were me I would put the deposit down(did I mention this is a great price) but make it contingent on upon inspection and approval. You can also ask the dealer, where it is and go see the car in person. Either way they will want a deposit and rightfully so.

Hey guys new here! I am a first time buyer and really want a CX-5 Touring 2013 or 2014 with moonroof and Bose package. Wondering with 25,000 cash down or OTD if that was possible around Texas?

Putting a deposit down makes you real to the dealer. It does cost them money to move cars around. It is refundable, just don't expect a kiss when the date is over.

I checked up on the typical prices being quoted by dealers for a 2014 CX-5 GT, as listed on Consumer Reports. They say that the average price quote is just $54 under MSRP.
