He didn't he just doesn't have a shorter belt yet. I've driven a protege without PS, and if you're not a total weakling, it's really not bad. Takes a little more effort to turn the wheel at a stop, but no big deal really. Of course, there was some talk about the insides shredding themselves if you took the pump out of the loop for a long time, but oh well.
