For my 16th I got a 1976 Dodge Charger
and not the cool muscle car ones either,

bought the car when I was 13... yup...13.... I actually bought a 1984 and 1986 mustang... both for a total of $850.... I did all the work myself with my dad, grandpa and uncle.... we even painted it ourselves originally, but I the perfectionist was dissastified with the orange peel and took it to Maaco *who did a remarkably okay job*.... here are some before and after pics, if you don't mind... sorry about the size.... still working on that:
yes, its a V6, 121 HP automatic... but it got me to school and back everyday form 10th grade to the last day of senior year.... then I bought a cx-7 then paid it down to 4,000 then gave it to my parents and bought an ms3..... thats my life story, hope you've enjoyed the novel! LOL

I was living in Upstate NY when I was 16 (1987), and you couldn't get a license in NY until 17. However, for Christmas when I was still 16 & on a learner's permit, my parents got me a beige 1980 Chevy Malibu. And it never saw the road. Turned out it had a cracked block. I drove it once around a bus garage parking lot, and never saw it again.
First car I got to take on the road for real was a black 1977 Ford Granada, which somehow had a 1976 engine in it. (Found that out when I went to replace the belts & hoses, and they were all wrong) Vinyl bench seats & a pimpin' "Realistic" brand stereo. Yeah, boyeeEEEEE!!!!

Didn't have a car at 16. Didn't get my first car until 18 and it was a 1971 Ford F150. Loved that truck. Auto, Power Steering/Brakes with a 302. Got some nice rims,painted it smoke gray, installed blackjack headers and dueled it out with 12 inch cherry bombs 
Truck was in mint condition. Wish I still had it. I got the truck in 84. Makes me sick to see parent buying their kids fast cars at 16. Very few kids are mature enough to handle a car with power at that age. Sure they may be able to drive but it's the peer pressure I'm talking about. Peer pressure can make the most mature and responsible kid do stupid s***.
Had a buddy that his dad helped him build a 1969 Camero. We're talking fully built motor, balanced and blueprinted. Car was beautiful and fast as hell. I still wonder today if his dad holds himself responsible in some way after his son wrapped the car around a tree doing over 100MPH and died. Not to mention to 2 other people that died in the car with him. Oh, he was a great driver and was responsible.....yeah. Sure thing.

When I was 16, I didn't have a car. The driving age in NJ was 17 then.
