What attracted you?

things that caught my eyes.
not in any order:
1. exterior.. smooth lines.
2. gauge/interior lights (needless of after market installation.)
3. sporty feel and the versitility of normal car (got the hatch)
4. responsive handling. (mite be a little bit hard for typical family car user)

worrying about
1. reliability.. since its new.. (heard bout sensory problem.. but personaly havnt ran into any so far)
2. start off a little bit slower.. (gotta get stick.. but after 2nd gear.. C YA)
3. long wait for the parts..

sums it up.. so far ~ LOVE IT~!
only 2600km on it.. the engine is runing in. getting even more responsive/power into it

wow. that's a lot.
but i am also REALLY interested in the new golf which is coming out beginning march or october when gti comes out. do you think it is worth the wait? the redesign appearance of the car knocked me right off my feet the first time i saw it. so sweet. but more $ though. anyone think i should give it a wait? but i love the 3 too tho.

Here were my reasons for getting the MZ3 5-dr.
1)exterior...sweet. Like a regular hatch on steroids.
2)interior...nice. Lots of styling cues from the RX-8. (Gauges, seats w/lumbars, etc.) & a sense of European styling
3)it's a Mazda: you know it's going to be reliable
4)the price: compared to the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic & others this car is hands down the winner

-I feel like I really should've had to pay more for what I got with this car. You get an awesome sense of quality & craftsmanship, good performance & comfortability, & lots of stowage space!
-Nothing against the Golf though, my buddy has one & it's pretty cool: I'm just a little biased cuz I have a 3. (rockon)

It does so many things right without even thinking about it. Great lines, power, handling, braking. Even the price is good.

The only things the other car companies are beating it with are: Warranty (Hyundai), and fuel efficiency ( just about everything else). I'll take power over fuel efficiency, but that Hyundai warranty is hard to beat.

- value for the money
- attractive interior
- attractive exterior (from certain angles)
- quick handling
- nice power range (more than what I've been used to)
- great options list (eventhough we don't get Xenon, TPMS or side airbags)
- dealership, even now after the sale, I don't have any complaints with them

Golf suck

first off, lemme throw my opinion that VW sucks... the thing that actually intrigued me about the maz3 was that it was a hatchback that made up for all the places where my '99 golf was being absolutely evil.

- cheaper for more: I was getting two more doors, leather upholstery, 6-disc changer, sun roof, power everything, more horsepower, cruise, more space, better handling and ride for about $10,000 less than a similarly equipped jetta wagon (what I consider the maz3 a cometitor for) and for the same price as a new golf IV.
- mileage is the same, despite more HP and torque
- mazda doesn't pander as much to brand ******. There is no luxury line for them to shove all of their interesting features or performance enhancements in an attempt to get you to drop another $20K (hmmm, well, there is mazdaspeed...).

now, for more of why VW sucks: all of the over-engineered crap they put on a base model '99 2.0L two-door broke and sucked and cost $400-600 to fix (a monthly payment on a car that was only 4 years old)
- trunk latch was screwed up before I got it (at about 30K).. it didn't know when it was closed and thus remained unlocked for a minute and a half (would be$600 to replace). Mazda has just treated 5th door like... a 5th door, unlocking and locking with the rest of the doors... magic!
- middle rear seat belt jammed on the VW at about 45K. $500 to replace since they'd have to rip the seat apart to get at the unit. Mazda has the middle rear set belt stored up in the rear pillar so it's not even in the way until you actually have someone riding there.
- CV joint cracked and sprayed everywhere at 50K $600 to replace and repack
- ignition module went at 60K (and VW has since replaced it's faulty $600 coil pack with multiple coil packs that fail more often.. much to the chagrin of VW/audi enthusiasts everywhere)
-alternator failed at 70K (yay, $500 for something that lasted until 150 on my 80's toyota)
- finally, security system in the thing started going off while the car was running (shutting down engine) if you let the trunk latch lock while the car was running (the electrical gremlins mated to have a monster) at 90K. I drove it to mazda and just dropped it off thankful that the trade in was inflated to $4000.

After having it for 5 mos or so, the maz3 is actually cheaper (and much newer) with my monthly payment than the golf was with it's monthly repair bill. On a 4 year old car, $600 a month to keep it running is recockulous... especially something that didn't have cruise, power windows, or easy entry into the back seats.

I'm not sure how the MK V's are doing in europe... but keep in mind that VWUSA usually pulls some nasty tricks on the car to make them ready for the american market (adding cupholders... having to retool the engines for american emissions restrictions and apparently worse fuel).. so even if they exhaust pine scent and everyone loves them in britian... they may suck awful given US summers and gas.

I don't think it'll be worth wait... VW made me love them and think I was getting an economy car with a bit of style and then cheated and robbed me with the little crapwagon (well, OK, I inherited it... so I wasn't given a lot of choice to be picky). Every person I've come across who has one is doing the same "I was tricked by cuteness and I have to maintain face or else I'll look dumb" act when I confront them about the myriad of problems they've had. That, or they've just expected to spend that much in maintenance or have their own garage (by far the happier owners).

If you get wooed by the VW redesigns, by all means, enjoy. Just don't let the VW dealer convince you to think you're getting some sort of magical bargain that will run on hopes and dreams... VW's require a lot of love... and if you don't have a garage and all the tools/time you'll be paying other people lots of money to give it the love it needs.

Hello all, I am a newly registered owner of a 3s Hatch and I was attracted by the first commercial I saw of the 3 sedan and then seeing the hatch pull up next to it. I actually thought it would be a while before getting one, but then some nice man decided to run a red light while I was on my way to work in downtown Dallas and I T-boned him.

My avatar shows my Passat after they removed the crunched hood. Well, due to the over-pricing of German car parts(only thing that makes sense) the insurance adjuster totalled my car. I originally wanted the RX-8, but my wife vetoed that one pretty quick and so I test drove the 3. I also test drove the 6, but I ended up enjoying the 3 more and so I bought one.

Mazda dealerships in the DFW area were not dealing on the '04s much if at all. One dealership got me to take one for the day and later I was contacted by another dealership that offered to go $200 over invoice and throw in tinted windows. I drove the Black 3s 5dr with no tint over to the new dealership and got a Titanium Gray one with leather and 6disc moonroof package including free tint for $18,781. I thought that was a pretty good deal and the people that sold me the car made it the best experience buying a car yet. I did not purchase the extended warranty, but did get GAPP insurance. I had to, it saved my butt when my Passat got totalled. I owed about $21,500 and the adjuster told me the car was only worth $18,500. I would have been extremely pissed if I had to pay $2,000 for something that was not even my fault.

I am very happy with the car so far and look forward to adding some stuff to it. My 4yr old son wants flames but I am not so sure I want to go there.

Awesome story. Glad you like your 3. I first saw the MZ3 hatch at a car show at the Qwest Center here in Omaha & when I saw it in person I almost couldn't tear myself away from it. After wanting one for months, I got mine in June & I love it.

I saw the hatch while looking online on MS Carpoint for a new car for myself. I loved the way it looked, found one online I wanted, got the invoice price, headed down to the dealer, made the deal and I still really like it after 8 happy months of ownership.

My nephew was at his fathers house this afternoon when I stopped by. He hadn't even seen one. He fell in love at first sight.

I looked at the VW's as well but 2 things bothered me: The price for both the car, and replacement parts are high. In itself, that wouldn't be that bad, but according to JD Power & Assoc., the quality is far below average. As well, everyone I know that bought one complains about the poor workmanship. Lastly, when I went to the dealership, the attitude was basically, " If you want a diesel you'll pay 9.9% interest, and like what you get, because if not, someone else will buy it tomorrow." That pissed me off, so I did the math. For me, the the savings in gas mileage wouldn't offset the extra cost of the car.

I wish Mazda would bring a diesel over here, and maybe change the crappy high sulphur diesel we get.

I was attracted to the 3 the second I heard about it. I'm a member of the 6 forums, had a 6, loved the 3 since the day it came out. It's smaller and easier to handle than the 6 and more fun to drive, IMO, more tossable. Better gas mileage and fits my personality better. I joined the 3forums and learned a lot about the car, almost a year before I traded my 6 for the 3. I don't miss my 6 much, except for my aftermarket leather and moonroof, my 3 performs equally as well, confirmed by a recent issue of Road & Track where the quarter mile times for the 3smtx was .1 second faster than the 6s atx. Braking is better too, and I finally got the color I wanted.

I was going to get a protege5 and them i saw the mx sportif online so i figured i'd wait for it to see... i ended up needing a new car about 3 months before expected, and was going to get a civic or a matirx since i figured i couldn't quite afford a 3 5 door (being a poor college student), but the mazda dealer was across the street from a pontiac dealer (vibe) so i figured why not see what an extra 3k will get you... wow. it was love the minute i hit the gas pedal on the open road. i had a stupid ear to ear smile on my face the whole test drive. they say money can't buy happiness, but no matter how stressed out or pissed off i get about school and stuff, there's nothing that a little cruise in my 3 can't cheer me up from. 7 weeks later, i could not be happier with my car and still look for excuses to take the long way home. this car rocks (band2)

For a few years there have been very few cars that have grabbed my attention. The Mini was one, but I have a family and needed to be sorta practical. My wife needed a car and we looked at used Elantra GT and Suzuki AreoSX, and the Protege5. My wife didn't like the Areo and we couldn't find a single Pro5 and she liked the GT so that's what she got. While looking for the Pro5 I learned Mazda was coming out with the 3. I loved the looks inside and out, great power even in the i (compared to the competition) and it was a Mazda (reliable). I've owned 2 Mazdas and worked at a Mazda dealership for a little while, no problems, ever, with either the '95 Protege or the '95 Miata.
I was playing with 4x4s until my Jeep blew it's rings. Then I got my 3.
