Mazda Protege5 2003
I just bought a used 2003 Mazda Protege5 and I'm trying to get it safety-ed for road use, but the wiring under the hood looks quite different from other cars what are the same model. Can anyone shed some light on how the wiring works?

Attached are two pics:
- the one with the RED bar is a pic of what mine looks like under the hood.
- the one with the BLUE bar is a generic pic of what a Mazda Protege5 looks like under the hood.

Why does mine look so different and how would I go about fixing it?

Hello,
On the left top corner the air hose coming out from the drum is going strait down.
On the other it is connected to the top.
Also where there is the green and the white electric plugs going in the 2 black boxes.
Normally there is one hose coming out from the back and one from the top on both.
Mine have only the one coming out in the back from both.

is the vacuum line from the cruise control "drum" connected to the manifold on your car?? does cruise work?

i am not positive but i THINK there is 2 different vacuum line routing designs. i've seen both. the one like yours takes the vacuum line from the vics/ vtcs connectors ( green and white ) and plugs the line into the top of the manifold towards the middle. the other type runs 2 vacuum lines from the vics/vtcs into a tee and routs that down to the back of the manifold toward the firewall. also the line running from the cruise control on your vehicle runs down to a port on the passenger side of the manifold, the other type, like on my '02 ES runs it to the top of the manifold. as long as everything is working correctly and if you inspect to make sure all lines are hooked up then personally i would just let it be. it's most likely just fine just a different design for some reason. maybe somebody knows why...

Yes it is connected but not on the top like the other car.
It is connected to the side.
Everything seems to be working.
Only the engine light is always on and the car didn't pass the emission test.

I can't really see anything different with the wiring or vacuum lines from here... but the blue one doesn't look 'generic' to me... looks messed with.

Thank you very much for your help.
This also more or less what the mechanic told me.
I was just a bit worried about the differences.

if your check engine light is on just check the codes and go from there. that's the first and easiest step.

You should get a code reader,...they're cheap and tell you exactly why the light is on.

You can get a code reader for about 30 bucks that plugs into your obd2 port and then broadcasts to your phone.

Who wants to play guess why the check engine light is on? My guess is EGR valve stuck closed.

How about quit being lazy, get off the computer, and go to autozone they check it for free. There are literally hundreds of reasons why on a protege
