Weird shudder when releasing gas pedal at gear 1 + 2?

I have a question regarding a 2002 Pro5 with standard transmission.

Here's the deal- I've noticed an issue where as I drive the car at 20km/h, holding the speed constant while on the throttle, I will feel a "shudder" when I let go of the gas until I step lightly onto the pedal again. It feels as if the car wants to stall. When I'm at 20km/h, I am at approximately 2500rpms.

This also happens when I'm in second gear, if I drop down to around 2000-2500 rpms, I get the same shuddering feeling. I'm confused as to why this occurs because when I coast in first gear at a low speed (10km-20km), shouldn't it be able to handle it without stalling? This is my first Mazda, so maybe I'm not familiar with the engine. I come from driving a 2003 Jetta 2.0 that has a torque of 130 lb/ft @ 1250rpm's as compared to this Pro 5's 120 lb/ft @ 4000rpm (rough numbers, but basically saying that my Jetta pulled some stronger torque at much lower rpms). With my Jetta, when I'm in first gear, it would never feel the stalling jerk until I hit about 1500 rpms. I would never get the shuddering feeling in any gear I'm at unless I am pushing it by going far below the rpm's recommended (such as 1500rpm in 2nd gear, at which point it will start jerking).

I've also noticed that when I go over large bumps this lurking/shuddering also occurs and is audible when the engine whines a bit, in a rocking fashion, until the road settles flat again.

Anyways, I'm just curious as to how I can remedy this problem. I've done some searching and some mention it is the fuel injectors? I've already put some Lucas injector cleaner in the gas tank so hopefully that helps a bit in the future, but the problem is still very prevalent. I hate having the car shudder and lurk around when I'm trying to coast around the parking lot looking for a spot.

Edit: Another possible explanation may be the "VTCS"? I'm not familiar with this but can it be a culprit?

Edit 2: The idle is good and constant when I start up the car. If this is an issue of interest, since I am not too familiar with Mazda's still, please explain to me what "normal" should be as I'm not 100% sure about specifics only that the idle does not fluctuate at start up. Idle is at about 700-800 rpm.

Edit 3: There are currently NO CEL's. It did have one last year before it was my car and it was due to a bad cat and O2 sensor. Those have since been replaced with brand new parts and the car is CEL-free.

Your input is much appreciated, please help me out!

Some general information about the vehicle:
222,000km
Standard transmission
Rear driver side caliper looks rusted
Tires need to be changed in 10,000km
Alignment is pulling to the left (it may be due to the tires)
I am not sure when the spark plugs/ wire/ harness was last changed
I just had an oil change and topped off the transmission fluid with a different brand fluid

Hope there aren't too many variables that are in question but thought I'd throw them out there to help those of you trying to help me :D

Cheers(canada)

its normal lol you dont have a problem at all
well you may want to check your motor mounts to see if there torn, but besides that, its normal for these cars
and most other manual cars ive driven

Yes protege are known for that... It really suuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkkkkkkks :( My parents have an 2010 manual corolla and maaaaaan sooo quiet, it doesn't do any of this s*** and they have no tranny lash (FYI crapped motor mounts). I kinda regret my choice now hehe but what do you want.

Heh, same here, you'll soon find yourself pushing the clutch in more at low speeds. Mind you, my brother's old-ass corolla does the same thing so I think it's just a thing that happens with cars that have less powerful engines.

Yeap, that's exactly what I've been doing.
Good to know that it's a normal thing. Thanks all for your input. Hope this post helps someone out there!
