I would like to know that too. I picked up my car today. Dealer only changed screws and gasket although I am positive that I heard screws rattling around my engine on couple occasion. If they only change screws why did they kept my car a whole day and they needed it in the morning the next day too for a few hours?

Where are you located in NY BlkZoomZoom?

Not L.I. .. Hudson Valley region AFAIK

If you already had a manifold put on then all you do is a compression check. Any other scenerio involves pulling the manifold off and at least replacing the screws.

Well, I just bought the car in December, so I don't know whether or not the original owner had a manifold put on... they did say that the compression was fine. I called Mazda USA and they said I could take it back and have them look at it again or go to another dealer. I guess I'm going to call up the local dealer again and see what they think. I'm not going to just forget about it, though...

Any missing or loose components in the original intake manifold warrants replacement.

Ok, I got a new manifold today, and, it's probably just me, but it feels like it pulls a bit harder in the mid-range...is there any difference b/w the old mani and the new one?

Yes, the screws won't fall out of the new one...lol, just keeeding. Got my gasket ordered, red loctite, tap, bolt, hole filler stuff & sanding pads for drill to do my own recall/VTCS removal sometime in the next couple of weeks. I would let the dealership do it if they gave me the old manifold to do the VTCS removal on or if they would just remove it while they were doing the recall but they won't so I won't. Hope it's all good. Already heard some bad stories........not sure what's scarier, what could happen without doing anything about the recall or actually being at the mercy of folks who have nothing vested in returning my car in the shape I would expect it to be in.

just made my appointment for this thursday...i asked the dealership how long it would take and if i'd need a rental and they said "it would take only 3-4 hours" and that they only have to replace certain "parts" of the manifold...

hopefully they're right and all is good...i haven't had any problems so far, so i guess, if nothing went through the combustion chamber, i'll be ok.......right???

i appreciate any input

ya, if you haven't had any problems, you should be fine. The "parts" are the screws, however for mine they said they found "irregular wear patterns" on some of my shutter valves, so they went ahead and replaced the whole mani, which is cool w/ me, cuz the new 1's, if I'm not mistaken, have rivets instead of screws...

That's kinda scary too. Do they make sure that the head of the rivet that gets pulled through before it breaks off isn't going to vibrate loose & go through motor as a smaller softer piece of metal than the screw or do they use a different kind of rivet that is not set that way?

They are not riveted. They are screwed in with the proper torque. The screws won't come loose if torqued properly.

Parton me for not reading all through 13 pages. Does anyone have a pic of what this "intake manifold shutter valve" looks like?

No f&*^*&g mechanic(s) or dealers mechanic touches my car without me knowing what it is.

Thanks alot.....this is not meant to be a hate post either. :)

Aw c'mon everybody hates 1/2 ass work done on their car especially if paying someone to. Do a search on VTCS, there are many threads with pics...

Thanks....but I don't often visit this forum, but every now and than. Got a quick link?

Red loctite & proper torque will ensure the VICS ones will not come off. As far as the VTCS is concerned, it won't have actuator butterflies or screws to fall off after I'm done.

Vics Or Vtcs, They Both Show Up On The How-to Pics!!!! Both Need Properly Torqued Screws If Keeping Both!!!!!!!!!
