Wastegate Question...

I just recently installed a FMIC and 3" downpipe-back exhaust. The first day it was running fine. Then the next morning, I started to have major boost spike issues. First gear, the boost spikes all the way to 15psi. Then all the other gears started to do the same thing. Now in first gear, on full throttle, the car sputters very loudly and still spikes to 15psi. I disabled the EBC and it still has the same problem.

Also, I noticed something when I checked under the hood. While under the hood, I revved the car and I saw white smoke come from under the heat shield. Then I noticed that there was a sound as if the exhaust is leaking.

My questions are: Could it I possibly have and exhaust leak? Would I need to replace the stock wastegate to stop the boost spikes?

NEED HELP RIGHT AWAY!!!

I hadn't heard about it boosting that high until recently but from what I've read changing the actuator fixes that problem.

well if you werent moded I would contact the dealer because there is a fix (TSB) on wastegate actuators.

If it was me...I would just spend the $90 to get a good wastegate actuator and install it myself.

If I purchase a wastegate actuator, will it be an aftermarket one or will it be another stock one? Also, where would I be able to buy a wastegate actuator?

And you said it would be about $90 bucks. I think I am able to get a used GT28 for about $400. You think I should just get that an then buy an external wastegate? If so, can I use a Super AFC to run the GT28 saftely?

I would do a search...it will be a aftermarket one.

I think www.*************.com is trying to get some in stock.

if not you will have to get something like this

http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ATP-WGT-011B&Category_Code=WGT

im not 100% sure this will fit becuase the length of the rod needs to be long enough for our turbos. They usually make adjustable ones.

GT28 usually comes with a internal wastegate right. You could get an external one and that will be awsome and accurate/adjustable.

But that means getting a custom exhaust manifold and downpipe made (unless you want it dumped). But the exhaust manifold has to be made for a external wastegate.

Spacemonkey, where did you see the info about the TSB for the actuator ? Im looking on TheMans FAQ, which he updates regularly, and I dont see it. Ill look on Alldata tomorrow at work for it there too.

I dont know but my tech at the local dealer told me to call them if theres "unusual" spikes in boost because their has been reports of faulty actuators. He wouldnt tell me to contact him if there wasnt a fix for it.

And its been noted in other threads too...

for example 2nd post of that thread:

your dealership is dumb. The actuator can be replaced by itself. My dealership JUST did this a little over 2 months ago as I was having the same problem. Call your dealership on their bulls*** & tell them to do it right...Or you could just contact Mazda NA

edit: Also, yes, the actuator you found is the one that is the direct replacement... I would still let your dealership know they are really ignorant.

Theres also several post about people getting their wastegate replaced. I dont know if its a TSB since its only happeneing to a few people. But its definately somethign the dealer has a fix for.

Ahh, okies Ill check it out tomorrow on Alldata to see if they have the TSB listed. :D not calling you out bro, just wondering where ya got the info. Mine is going to the Stealer next week to get front A arm bushings, sawbar bushins, rear sways AGAIN, and a leaky turbo. Im gonna mention this to them and see if I cant get mine replaced as "preventive" maintenance. :D

Let me know how it goes. I hear its not a problem if your not experiencing boost spike right now.

But I hear it maybe a issue if you decide to boost more.

Which I dont get why some dealers are giving crap about boost gauge. it saves them trouble from a blown engine.

ummm if you can get Apexi Super AFC to work...no one has gotten it to work for our cars.

The only fuel managment that work for our cars are

- Emanage (piggy back) controls fuel and timming
- Unichip (piggy back) controls fuel and timming
- MPI (piggy back) controls fuel and timming
- DSMconvert fuel controller (split second) controls only fuel
- Microtech (stand alone) control fuel and timming
- AEM (stand alone) control fuel and timming

The cheapest is probally MPI and Unichip which are pnp piggy backs for about $600. Unichip comes pretuned for 12 psi trailing off to 9 psi.

Greatest potential comes from AEM and Microtech but they are also expensive.

it would be wise not to boost more then stock without knowing our cars potential. i.e. dont do it unless you have enough fuel. Because our cars cant flow engouh fuel with 12 psi to redline. (rods withstanding of course) i.e. fuel system must be upgraded for you to boost 12 psi in higher RPMs. or you will blow your engine and even if your sucessful that is the limit as our rods dont withstand alot of HP.

what exactly is wrong with the stock turbo? Why dont you max that out 1st rather then swaping turbos. Theres not dramatic difference between your GT28 and our T25R...UNLESS ITS A GT28RS...which is a different compressor family. why spend $400 on a used GT28 (which may require rebuilding and new manifold) when you can buy a new wastegate actuator for $79? or possible get it replaced for free under warrenty?

After chattin wit kicker, I decided to get the split second afc, a wideband, corksport downpipe, 440cc injectors, and a better wastegate.

Just need to know if that wastegate on that ************* website would work with the stock turbo for sure.

Don't worry about it. Found out what the problem was. The hose that I have running from the EBC to the wastegate had a crack in it. Got a new hose today a fixed the problem.

Thanks for all of your help...
