Good response!! You're dead on about greed. If everybody's got everything they want there's no reason to fight. But then again who's happy if they can have more?
The eye for an eye thing was meant more towards folks who don't want to help themselves. I do agree on your take of it. I guess I think there are too many folks that look at jail as a place to get a roof overhead and a warm meal where unlike a shelter they don't leave. They commit small crimes, do some time, and when things don't work out, they start the process all over. If those folks got punished a little more severely, folks might try harder to help themselves from getting back to the point. Reallistically, chain gangs picking up trash and cutting grass and what not would be a great way to curb crime. Imagine driving past inmates picking up trash in 95 degree weather. It'd make me think twice.
I'd never wish for the type of enforcement they have in the Middle East. People die for just speaking out against the government. I just wish ours weren't so lax.

Second, okay I will admin you are right about East vs. West. The way I was thinking about is was that Germany as a whole was not rebuilt by America vs. the USSR, and by that point you are correct; the country with the most money to spend did a better job.

Hey, I guess you haven't heard about the Patriot Act? The government can remove you from your home and detain you forever without even placing chargest against you. You no longer have the freedom to a fair trial, or even a trial at all. The was a time where we, as Americans, could say atleast here we are free and don't resort to their (the EVIL <s>Nazis, Communists, </s> Terrorist nations) level. Guess what? We do the same s*** here, but we just live in nicer houses.
The govt. can take me out of my house and detain me. If I give them a reason to. If you're not preaching death to the govt. and hate toward others, they won't bother you. Seriously, do you think they're bust through your front door without a reason? Chances are if they come to take you away you've screwed up and they've already got the evidence to justify it. And if you were found to be a terrorist in this country you deserve to be taken out back and shot. You don't really deserve a trial. That is if the evidence were overwhelming. The Patriot Act lets you gather evidence while a person is committing a crime. It lets them dig their own grave so when the trial comes around the evidence is overwhelming. If you're worried about your privacy that much you are probably doing something wrong. Just because the government doesn't charge you with a crime doesn't bother me. If they think they can get info from you about a bombing then who cares. If you hadn't been screwing around in the first place you probably wouldn't be there would you? I like the Patriot Act. Because I keep my ass clean I have nothing to worry about. If a law is passed to keep the nation safer why would you be against it?
The patriots act isn't a bad thing, its just not the right way to do things in the "free world" As pluto explained it drasticly reduced the measures law enforcment need to take to put you away.
I am glad you can place that much faith in your law enforcment agencies to use such power responsibly.
My fear is that the less checks and balances needed in legal procedure, the more room there is for corruption.

The more constitutional rights are given away in this plight for safety the less that safety is even worth anyhting.

I don't feel like I've lost any liberties. I can go out and do as I please and as long as I don't break any laws, I'll be home at the end of the day. Simple as that. If I were considered to be a threat against the U.S., I would probably say I've lost some liberties. The worst I do is smoke weed once or twice a year. Am I worried some branch of the govt. is going to take me away? Of course not. They've got bigger fish to fry. If I wanted to blow up a subway then I'd be afraid of the Patriot Act. Bottom line is, if you're breaking the law, you don't deserve some liberties that law abiding folks deserve. That's just my point of view and I'm not trying to argue over it. Its just different interpretations I guess.

Just because the govt. is checking things out, these people are upset. If the govt. reads a little too much into things and folks are inconvenienced, who cares. If they took my "white powdery stuff" I use to fertilize my flowers because it seems suspicious, good! I'm glad they're trying to be on top of things. So what if your privacy was invaded? We're rounding up everybody our govt doesn't like and putting them in a big oven? Were the Jews going to take over in Germany? Our govt is trying to catch folks before they tear stuff up over here. I don't think our govt is into persecution anymore. Don't think they've done that since they put the Japanese in holding camps after Pearl Harbor. I don't think there's a comparison between what Hitler did to the Jews and how our govt uses the Patriot Act to round up terrorists.
