Want to install a fuel economy gauge in a 1995 Protege(OBD-I, I think)for hypermiling

Have you ever tried hypermiling (maximizing mileage/fuel economy) ?

1995 Protege
I'm glad I found this forum. I hope this thread is in the right place. I'm not sure if 95 is first or second generation.

I've been hypermiling (coasting, pulsing and gliding, light-timing, high air pressure, etc.) and getting about 50% better mileage than the EPA rating but with a scan gauge to learn from, I know I can get up to double the mileage. Some people are getting 80 or 90 mpg with similar cars with practice. I don't inconvenience other drivers or drive dangerously. In fact, it's probably safer because I'm very aware and drive a bit slower. Although, it does involve sometimes higher speed corners on the racing line when there are no other cars or people around (to avoid losing momentum).

Here's a website with 105 driving tips that I found the best source. There are things that you might never think of on your own:

I want to buy a Scan Gauge (or SuperMid or even just a vacuum gauge) to know both instantaneous fuel economy and trip fuel economy. I've heard on other forums--and from a guy at Napa--that my car doesn't have OBD-II but on one website it listed that it did. I couldn't find the port either. I'm wondering if anyone knows a workaround or a product that works with OBD-I.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice, (drinks)

I read this

but I dont have an answer

what is the cost of scan gauge ?

a 95 might have obd2. I have a 96 made in 95 and it is obd2.

does it have the connector near the hood latch? have you put a scanner on it? Speaking of scanners, there are some that are cheap now that will tell you engine load, fuel pump on/off, fuel trims and o2 readings, ect...$75-150 USD....that is for obd2 though.

I read the links and didnt see anything about how vacuum gauge relates to fuel economy... paste me up some info.

And another thing, I read some old thread like this one. Might have been one of the other ,mazda boards. Seems the peolpe round here just want burn more gas...

I was talking to a guy the other day that said he doesnt think it is possible to convert OBDI to OBDII. Or if there is, it would be extremely expensive/hard to do because you have to basically change all the electronics in the car.
