Ok... was driving over to the cabin today and on a bored stretch decided to play with the deactivation buttons on everything just to light up the dashboard. 
I know stupid...
Anyway... BSM decides to go into trouble mode and continues to flash on and off. I thought. I am not pulling over to stop the car & restart to reset this as no amount of fiddling with the BSM off switch did anything.
The fix.... just wait for another car to pass by ... that turned it off right away after they passed. It must have been set in some diagnostic/calibration mode or something.
