Thanks to Perfworks, I thought I would start a new thread with some questions on the removal of the VTCS plates. Anyone who has removed there plates are welcome to post any information or tips. Before I start to remove them here are some questions I have.

1- Are there any issues with CEL's

2- Idling issues?? (Erratic idle)

3- Is it worth the time to remove them?

4- Are the HP numbers noticable?? Better response, ect.

Thanks in advace

1 - As long as the sensors and the actuators are still intact there should be no CEL. But, there should be a way to fool the ECU there.

2 - None that I know of.

3 - I don't think so.

4 - Slim to none. There might be a minor gain but none worth going to all the trouble of removing them.

If you are still interested in removing them, you might be better off getting the FS-ZE intake manifold so that you will make some minor gains with the removal of the VTCS.

Why the gain with the FS-ZE manifold, mostly due to little plastic box on top that helps with resonance. It only helps smooth and add some torque.

All of this is as far as I can remember about that little piece of system. So if I am wrong on a point, please correct nicely.

You are welcome...

imo not really worth your time. think of how long that'll take. is it really worth it for a marginal increase in power at best? you'd be better off leaving it in and learning how to port a head using a dremel etc. the aussie p5 doesnt have vcts. we only make 1.4hp more in standard form....and that's because we have 9.7:1 compression pistons.

raaz , there are no issues with drivability or CEL. In fact you increase your gas mileage and volumetric efficiency N/A and turbo

it is a great mod.
Now in regards to twilight's post....
first of all,it is well worth the time to get a smoother transition thru the manifold runners to the head port. YOU SHOULD NOT play with the head porting. IT IS TUNED PERFECT from the factory for the flow characteristics of this particular head design and everyday driver. It has nice raised intake ports that match the gasket surface perfectly. Secondly the manifold runners that meet the head area are conciderably smaller in diameter.
Raaz from what i understand is going turbo. This will help him dramatically to increase velocity without resistance to flow.

i know when i had the p5 ecu in my mp3 that it was causing a higher cold idle.
because it wasnt seeing the control solenoid plugged in was it?
did you have a check engine light?
plus he has a P5:)

Thanks for the responses. :D I do plan on removing them. I had no plans on porting the head but I am going to port match the mani to the intake ports on the head.

VTCS is only to help up on warmup of the engine. It operates IIRC under 140F and under 3000rpm, then is no longer functional. These are the plates closest to the head. VICS operates at 4750 and are midway through the manifold. There is slim to no benefit of removing them unless you have a larger turbo and plan on porting things. Cold starts will be a little rougher, but nothing to cry about.

What we need is a real intake manifold. :-) If i had VTCS, I wouldn't waste my time removing it.

MP3 manifold doesn't have VTCS in it...So no need to remove it.
stutters im reffering to his statement that he made , that says IF he had it he wouldnt waste his time taking them out

OOPS, sorry...I made that comment early in my morning with a lack of caffiene to start my day.

Please ignore...:)
