The choice for a refined taste

Volvo Cars is now introducing R-design - an exclusive factory-fitted options package for customers who want a car with refined attributes. R-design will initially be available on the Volvo C30, Volvo S40 and Volvo V50 as of autumn 2007.
"The possibility of tailoring one's car to suit personal tastes is becoming increasingly important to car buyers today. R-design has been developed for buyers who want a refined and sporty look for their cars," says Gerry Keaney, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Cars. Customers can choose between 10 exterior colours, and the R-design badge in the grille is accompanied by a range of specially designed exterior and interior details.
Exterior features include a satin matt-finish grille, colour co-ordinated bumpers and lower side mouldings, rear or roof spoiler, satin matt-finish door mirror caps and five-spoke aluminium wheels (17 inches, 18 inches available as option). There is also a decotrim on the tailgate of the C30 and V50.
Contrasting seats

Inside the car there are seats in off-black Vulcaflex with the seat cushion and backrest in contrasting cream-coloured leather. The R-design logo embossed on the backrest and the contrasting stitching reinforce the seats' sporty appearance.

Other R-design interior details include the leather-trim steering wheel with its R-design logo, the unique combi instrument, aluminium pedals, specially designed aluminium centre stack and door inlays, gear selector with aluminium inlay and tufted dark sport floor mats with contrasting light leather seams. A selection of R-design features will also be available as accessories.
Emotional and extrovert

"R-design is entirely in line with the accelerated focus on making our cars more extrovert and emotional. It gives the buyers the opportunity to spice up the already distinct personality of these car models," says Steve Mattin, Senior Vice President and Design Director at Volvo Cars.

Lame. They kill off the "R" line of performance volvos and then call an appearance package "R-design", complete with an R badge in the grill?
Super-ultra-mega-lame. Way to go, Ford of Sweden!

This has to be the most boring and spartan interior I've ever seen!

Volvo only had two R models, S 60 R and V 70 R. The "R" line is just like the "S" Line from Audi and M Technic from BMW. They are just appearance aero packages for the most part. The "R" is not just a R but "R-design" in the grill.

I think its a very simple and clean interior and I like interiors like that. What do you want 100 buttons that you can not read when driving? The seats are very similar to Mazdas.

That thing looks like poo compared to an S60R.

Its not an S60. Its a S40 which is Volvo's version of the Euro Focus and Mazda3.

The R's were pretty hot versions of the S60 and V70. Suspension, power appearance, they were a good pakage. They announced this year that they were killing them off.

I know the grill says R-design, it seems like they could have called it something else instead of "R". It makes kind of a mockery of the old cars.

I know what the R models are. I do get to drive both from time to time and which are far from stock. They were Volvo's answer to the S4 and M3. I know they are getting killed off due to poor sells.

I do agree with you that they should called it something else. VMS sounds better. Volvo Motorsports.

I still like this car and especially if its a T-5 AWD. And have performance aftermarket parts on it. Like these.

I used to have a 2005 S40 T-5 AWD 6 sppeed and it was a real fun car. Giving it the R treatment while maintaining the same engine and HP performance is kinda lame, all show with no additional go.

Its called aftermarket performance parts.

I'm probably the only person that likes the R-design interior. Added performance would have been nice though...

They are simply trying to stay in the game without the extra cost of the performance parts.
