Vibration, balance,....opinions....

Not to get off subject

i went from yoko es100's to the sumitomos. I think the sumi is a far superior. Brake away is more predictable, grip is much better, less sidewall flex.

But I have to say after ~6k miles on my Yoko AVS ES100's I think they're loud as hell. So far (only about 100 miles,) the Ventus H405's are really nice. They ride quiet, and are a bit softer (being H rated helps here, big time.)

No more Z rated tires for me. I have no plans to do +149mph sustained, thank you.

Dang, Jim. You're lucky. Mine start vibrating right around 65 mph and only get worse as I approach 80+.

What do you think of the HRIIs? When I first put them on I felt like they weren't gripping as well as the Dunlops. But now that they're a little more broken in, they're feeling better. And they're better in the rain than my Dunlops were.

I've been watching your woes with WheelMax. I think it's a shame they're so inconsistent. Their freak'n prices can't be beat ($739 shipped for my combo.) That's insane. Great looking 17" wheel that's not too heavy, and fantastic tires!! I'll get to those in a minute. If need be, come to Columbus and get your balance done. Trust me, if you've got a ride disturbance, the GSP9700 will find it, and eliminate it.

As for the Ventus tires. I am truely amazed how nice they ride. I was very concerned about going to a 40 series tire on a daily driver. All I can say is these tires are the s***. Period. Smooth, quiet (so far,) and just as grippy as the Yoko's. At first, they seemed to "wallow" a bit, but as it turns out, that was just the casing realse agent. Now that I've put a few hundred miles on them (yes, just installed them this afternoon!!,) they're fine. They actually ride tons better than the Yoko's (for me anyway.) And, to my amazement (stating this again,) they do not vibrate at all on the highway, or anywhere for that matter. Maybe I just got lucky..... :D

Hope you all get your ride disturbances worked out. I know it's frustrating... been there, done that.

Take care,
Jim

I agree about the quietness, but I still feel like I can't push them quite as hard as the Dunlops. The tail started out on me on an on-ramp this afternoon and I was probably barely doubling the recommended speed :D

You crazy mang! :D

Jim: How much should I expect to pay for a balance with that machine? I was just quoted $10.95 per tire at the shop closest to me with the GSP9700.

The guy on the phone sounded surprised that I knew what kind of balancer he had. :D

Nate -

Anywhere from $10 - $25 per corner. Sounds pricey, but you can't beat the balance. I think I paid ~ $50 for my last balance at Discount Tire.

PS - Just got back from Summit Compact show / drag races at Norwalk. What a blast!! :D No real vibration the whole way up & back (about 210 miles.) Maybe a little at ~76mph, but that's it. Anywhere above or below that they ride like glass.....

Vibration fianally gone!

Well, this weekend I went to have my wheels balanced with the GSP9700.
The service guy would not do the job, even after I had received an appointment date and time. He said the cant balance the rims alone; they have to be on the car.:bs: So, no biggie. I decide to run over to a tire shop across the street from him. I talked with their service manager. He was very helpful. He said the lug nuts were too big for the rim I had. So, he pulls out some gorllia tuner lugs, which were a whole lot smaller than the ones I was using.
Now I'm, thinking, these nuts are way too small. We put 'em on, went for a drive and low and behold, the vibration is gone!:D I mean GONE. Nothing. Smooth as can be. I was surprised lugs could make such a difference.

So, lamp3, go out to a good tire store and check out some lugs. If you are using the ones provided with the rims, they might be too big, like mine were. I paid $32.00 for all, and that includes the key lock as well.

When you changed out the lugnuts did you do them one at a time with the car on the ground? Or did you jack the car up and take them all off a wheel and put all the new ones on?

Anyway, that is weird. Never thought something that close to the center of the wheel could cause a problem with balance. It's almost inexpensive enough to try, although I may have trouble returning them once I've put them on my car (if it turns out that is not the problem.)

Actually, it might just be my imagination or me getting used to it, but the highway speed vibration seems to be less now than it was when I put the wheels on. Maybe the tires are getting a more even wear on them. (dunno) I do still feel it though. What to do . . .

I took off each wheel. Car on jack stands. One at a time. The lugs I have are deeper set than the ones supplied.
This is weird, like you said. I have never had such a dramatic change with just a lug replacement.
I would say do it. Its not that expensive, and the results are fantastic!! Try it. You wont be disapointed.

Hunter 9700 road force variance machine.

thats the same i use at work, it should show all vibrations problems if not, get your car on the lift and run it up to where it starts to vibrate. get some one to stand under the car and check for a bent axle. 80% of the time if its not in the wheels/tires itin the axle.

Well I finally had a few hours free to go get my wheels balanced. I went to the local Ford dealer (nearest shop with the 9700) who was a little confused as to why I would come to them and almost turned me away . . . but, long story short, the vibration is 90% gone. I am happy now because I can drive on the highway without feeling like I'm operating a jackhammer. Thanks for the recommendation. Cost me $51 total, by the way.

Good deal Nate! Glad to hear to hear ya got things straightened up. I, for one can't tollerate any highway ride disturbance. I've actually got a little right now with my OE wheels/tires on the car. Taking it in tonight to get them re-balanced (hopefully, a freebie.) Byers Mazda/Subaru (my local dealer) now has a GSP9700 (and someone who knows how the hell to use it.) :D

Happy motoring,
Jim
