Vibration, balance,....opinions....

Hey all, I've got a new set of rota tarmacs with sumitomo htrz 2's.

I've had them balanced twice, and still everytime I get above eighty I start getting a vibration in the wheel... Last time I was at the dealer I had the whole front end checked out to make sure there was nothing wrong under the car, not sure what to do next...

when you get them balanced are you getting dynamic balance (both sides have weights) or static balance (only one side has weights). generally with aftermarket wheels most shops will only do static which is fine for normal driving, but if you're doing 80+ a lot and dont like the vibration then I'd recommend going and having a dynamic balance performed. just bear in mind too that it does take some mileage for the tires to break in and wear to the camber and toe settings of the car...usually only a couple hundred miles.

hmm, I've got about a thousand or so on em, both times they were dynamic balanced.....

......frustrating

I have the exact same problem! Rota slipstreams, Falken Azenis tires. I'm hoping someone will give a definate answer.
My friend Jim, (aka Mackdaddy), has slipstreams as well. He had his balanced on a Hunter 9700 road force variance machine. Thanks Jim:D

I have called many shops in So Cal, and no one has heard of these. I will try this dynamic balance first and go from there.

Does anyone else have this problem?
HELP US! PLEASE! This vibration is killing me!

Thank you,

Patrick

What size wheels and tires are you running....??? One other thing i just thought of...do you know right off what the center bore of the hub on the rota's is, for some reason i remeber rishie saying that they needed to be bored to properly fit the protege's hub. That could be a source of high speed vibration if the wheel is slightly off center of the hub, if my memory serve's me the protege's center hub is a 63.1mm diameter. I remember that most of the rota's had an off hub inside diameter from my miata days, you had to get hubcentric rings to make them fit the hubs since the ID of the bore on the wheel was actually oversized.

I'm running 215/45/16. No rubbing at all. Overall diameter has not changed enough to make a difference. The center bore is actually bigger. So I have so called centering rings that are supposed to work, but no luck. The ID is just like you stated, 63.1. These centering rings are designated 63.1. They are not the right ones. Maybe the numbers are right, but I can tell you for sure these are not right. When I try to mount these wheels, you really have to push super hard to get the wheel to fit flush against the hub. When it finally does go on, the lugs don't line up at all. When tightening the lugs, its not smooth the way it should be. There is some binding some where, making for a wheel thats not mounted correctly. I dont think its right to have to force the wheel on, then hold it in place to lock the lugs down.

yeah my msp started doing this about a week ago. im going to check the lugs to make sure there not loose from when i had to do something. Then if still not im going to have them balanced, and if it still doesn't work more than likey its brakes my vibration only come over 60 - 80 under braking pressure. So it could be my rotars or discs are out of line or warped i'll have to check into it asap.

I've got hub centric rings too, I ordered them up from Rishie a couple weeks ago, still no help......... It's drivin me ape s***.

Ryan your problem is for sure warped rotors. I've had mine turned twice.

its either warped rotors or loose lugs.. im hoping its loose lugs.. if its rotors oh well.

If its rotors pull em off yourself and take them in. it'll save you a boat load! I paid 5 bucks per rotor to get them turned. Just pull your wheels off and then its just 2 bolts each side to get the caliper out of the way and the rotors come right off.

it pisses me off, its like at 80 mph a switch gets flipped, then the angry voice of the car gods say AHHHHAHA I'm going to piss you off now.-

(lol) That's the way I feel!!

If I can't correct this problem, they will be for sale cheap!

Here's the scoop

The true measurements are as such:

ID = 67.1mm (hub bore size for Protege.)

OD = 73mm (hub bore size for Rota, and other aftermarket wheels.)

The hubcentric rings should fit tight (and I mean tight!!) They're a PITA to take the wheels on/off the car, but trust me you want them tight. They make for a perfect fit once the lugs are tightened. It's a bit tricky to get the hang of it, but after you do, it's no big deal. ;)

The only machine that can really balance todays high performance tires and wheels, is the Hunter GSP9700 Road Force Variance machine. Discount Tire uses this machine (at least in Ohio they do.)

Here's the link http://128.242.141.90/us/products/wb/products_wb_9700.htm

You need to dynamic balance the wheel/tire combo. This machine will also check for "high & low" spots in the rotating assembly. If need be, the tech can do what they call a "match mount" on the wheel/tire (i.e. - match the high spot of the wheel, with the low spot of the tire.)

I'm sure if you call around, someone in your area will have a 9700. :)

Good luck all,
Jim

o.k. Just got off the phone with some bonehead that has a GSP 9700 wheel balancing machine. He says, "Yeah, com' on down. We can balance your wheels for you. The price will be $25.00."
I'm thinking, great! No prob, right? Well he then says that price is PER wheel!!:bs: I know a scam when I see one. $100.00 for a wheel balance job? I better get a (bj) from the phone girl as well for that price!
Anyway, I called another place and there price was much better.
Get this; $24.95 for all four. Thats more like it!
So, I made an appointment for this Sat. I can hardly wait to see if this machine is as great as they say.
If so, I will post my findings Monday. Hopefully, no more vibrations.

I would like to thank Mackdaddy for the link in finding this machine in my area.:D Thank you so much!

Patrick

Glad to help.

Ironically, I just got my 17x7" Exel TZ-10's with 215/40/17 Ventus HRII 405 tires from Wheelmax today. Very little weight on any of the wheels (one has none.) No vibration at all. I can't believe it.

Good luck,
Jim

Dang, Jim. You're lucky. Mine start vibrating right around 65 mph and only get worse as I approach 80+.

I tried taking them for balancing once but the shop didn't get around to them in the time they promised. They told me to come back in an hour - I came back an hour & 15 later, and was told they wouldn't get around to them for at least another 2 or 3 hours! This was after I gave him my cell phone number and explicitly told him to call me if it was going to be done sooner or take longer. Boy was I pissed.

Sorry for the brief hijack, but the shop I took it to was actually on the list of shops with the balancer you recommended. It sucks, cause that's one of the closest ones to me but I refuse to go back there.

What do you think of the HRIIs? When I first put them on I felt like they weren't gripping as well as the Dunlops. But now that they're a little more broken in, they're feeling better. And they're better in the rain than my Dunlops were.

i went from yoko es100's to the sumitomos. I think the sumi is a far superior. Brake away is more predictable, grip is much better, less sidewall flex.
