The cost of a vanity plate for someone who wants to get one and who just bought a brand new SUV, is no more an unreasonable financial burden than the 4kb of data required for you to post "save your money" is consuming an unreasonable amount of bandwidth on your internet connection.

Here in Virginia, vanity plates are part of registration and that's only $35 a year. So, if I held onto my CX-7 for 10 years, that's only a $350 investment. And they can be transferred. In my case, though, transferring wouldn't be a good idea. (cool)

And the cops never came. So I don't think that should be a factor. In all of those cases I was able to read off the regular plate just fine anyway.
