Well I always let my car warm up at work while I finish up. Today when I go back out to the car I notice a wierd exhaust smell. I can't really put my finger on it, but it is deff. not normal. Then I get in the car and the CEL is on...When I get home I pop the hood to look around and listen. I can hear the valves or whatever ticking, but I think I hear a faint knock. I have to wait to either head to the dealership or stop by somewhere to check for the code. But with check list of
-Wierd smelling exhaust
-CEL
-MAYBE, a faint knock...notice the maybe.

Does anyone have an idea on what it could be.(group)

Hm.. I'd still get it checked out.

it really sounds like the emissions recall.

Cant really tell without the CEL # though. Sorry.

Hopefully its nothing too bad.

it would make life alot easier if we knew the code :) free scan at autozone!

Yea I;m hoping it's not knocking because I didn't hear it over the valves to much if at all. And I figure knock would be loud. But the gas smelling weird, is...well weird. Maybe the turbo seal or something, letting coolant in somewhere to be burnt in the exhaust?? IDK

and I'm getting it scanned tomorrow. It just happened like not that long ago so s*** is closed

things like this are why i buckled down and went to scantool.net nice stuff, works well

Make sure to put the stock motor mount on before you go to the dealer, just to cover all your bases. and if your boost gauge is easily removed then definitely that too.

oh and check the oil!!

i dont have the knock but i know the weird gas smell. not my ass. im serious. lol. it smells like it comes out of where the intake/pcv valve goes. do you have a catch can. i do and i thought it was that but dont want to pull it all apart to get to that pvc again. it sucked. let me know im curious as well. my ap is comign in so when i get it all installed ill let you know what i find out.

I would think valve tick is normal on this car, I had valve tick on my evo too and made me get it checked because they are so loud. Also could be the sound of the DISI on the MS3.

As for smell, I noticed my MS3 has an unburt gas smell from the exhaust. Its not noticable all the time, but it reeks of gas when idiling. My car has no mods yet and its been really cold if that makes a difference.

not to thread jack but I have three to five knocks/ticks when I first start up the car. No cel car seems to run fine. Been contemplating getting it checked out. Thoughts one what it might be?

what octane fuel did you use? more than likely you filled up with a lower octane higher sulfur fuel.. our cars dont like it. might have even been a fluke with the holding tank at the station where you took in a lot more sulfur and less octane than the average. that would be my guess. it would cause ticking and bad smell.

I would be pist if it's bad gas. I always go to the same station, same pump, and 92oct. And come to think about it, it does have a almost sulfur smell. I still have to stop by autozone today. And I have a deal apt. friday, so we will see whats up

i use a high traffic shell station and only use vpower 93 octane. shouldnt be a problem on my end. its probably just because my turbo timer runs for 30 seconds when i shut down the car and im getting that unburnt fuel smell. nice. lol.

It ended up being code 7787. They said bad oxygen sensor, which I guess would cause bad smelling exhaust. What's your guys take on it?
