Evidentially, Mazda is testing a Series Hybrid, a la the Volt. It's currently in a 5 body:

The interesting thing about it the mention of Ford at the end. If the Chevy Volt is anywhere close to a hit, Ford will be desperate to have a vehicle to compete. Mazda just doesn't have the marketing power nor the dealership network in the US to compete with GM... but Ford does.

They are farther along in development as you are initially led to believe.
