US Diesel's big splash introduction

The problem with SHORT COMMUTES on the diesel is that it will never warm up properly to burn off deposits and see peak efficiency.

Most engines require 10-15 miles of driving to prevent crankcase condensation and other issues due to not reaching and maintaining operating temperatures (moisture in exhaust causing rust, etc)

With diesels the same problems can happen but even more so since diesels use compression to ignite the diesel fuel and peak efficiency is only achieved once the pistons and rings expand at operating temps.

Plus the car will never regenerate the particulate filter properly as it need high temps/long distances to do this. Once blocked the DPF is either a dealer regen or DPF replacement which will cost you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and unlikely to be covered in the warranty as you've bought an unsuitable car for the type of driving and mileage. Ignore the DPF warning light at your peril.

You must be honest about your driving distances to the dealer when buying. They should (whistle)advise whether petrol or diesel will be suitable for your needs.

They won't advise so best to do research beforehand.

Also people need to factor in the extra initial outlay when calculating fuel savings.

I do short journeys, only do 7K miles a year, and have never seen a DPF light in all cars fitted with it, from 2009.
Its city stop start crawling runs that kill both petrol and diesel engines.

I had a DPF burn yesterday during a 7 mile run to my daughters, there's a lot of misleading comments made about DPF fitted cars IME. Longest twice weekly run I make is 15 miles to my fishing lake. Then during summer I can tow for up to 2 hours max, which probably creates even more soot to burn off.

That's good Xtrailman. I was just warning our US cousins of the possibility.

As a former 2010 VW TDI owner ...
I can say for sure that DAS DIESEL is dead for the US market at least for passenger vehicle.
but I do miss getting 49-50 MPG without even trying . . .

Meh we shall see..what i can say with certainty is anything vw is officially dead to me!

yeah, audi is eye-candy to me, but i doubt i could ever buy one.

looks like you're gonna owe me those beers. lol... at least it looks like its still coming, albeit as a 2019... unless they pull a CX9 and release a 2016 in the fall... which never made sense to me.

anywho, i've got that ARK GRiP exhaust on my QX now.... saweet!

here's some dude with the same set-up as me. Its a nice system. gives it a more exotic sound in my eyes... nice and throaty without that stupid fart-can/angry bee sound.

Big bore exhausts :-(

They spend millions on developing quiet exhausts as part of legislation and then let companies sell alternative look at me exhausts. Sorry, I dont get it and I would have offenders sent to Gitmo.

Son in laws v6 AMG merck, makes a wonderful sound which can be turned up down or off.

I get it.

I can understand your point, but in the land of Harley Davidsons, my car is still but a whisper. The noise pollution put out by bikers around here is off the charts.

Big bore exhausts sound like big wet farts to me. I just find it laughable.

Merk doesn't have big bore exhausts, the sound is completely different to the young knobs driving round with their aftermarket add on.

The CX-5 Diesel is now on the Mazda USA site (just a teaser so far)

I don’t see anything that wasn’t there before. 🧐. I just see the CX-5 Diesel under future vehicles with the form that signs you up for everything but an update on the diesel. Hopefully I’m just missing it.
