i need to replace my clutch and flywheel. i wanted to upgrade but i don't have a huge budget. i'm not quite sure what to go for in a clutch. i kinda have an idea of what flywheel to look for. give me ur opinions

do you really need to replace the flywheel?

i have heard there is a mazdaspeed reduced weight flywheel that works best,
some of the others are lighter, but actually cause worse performance, dont ask me to explain, its just what i have read on the boards.

as far as clutch, i would go with exedy stock replacement myself as seen on PG. thats in my near future plans

i really wanted and upgraded clutch. is the exedy replacement any better than stock?
i've been having tranny problems and some guy on the forum said he had had the same problems and it was the flywheel

i'd like to know more bout the flywheel thing. i've nvr heard of it worsening performance. i've heard it makes it easier to stall but thats it

there are different stages of exedy available,
the direct replacement, which would be the same as the msp stocker, heavier duty than the p5 stocker, but after that there are stages 1 and 2 for more grip.

check out protege garage .com or crossover auto.com for descriptions and options.

s t r e e t u n i t . c o m has a stage 1 clutch by spec for a lil over $250. i think i'll be goin for that and the mazdaspeed lightweight flywheel. any more info would be cool tho

Spec, Act. just check out the sites you'll find something. flywheel not necesary. but if still want to look check out the fridenza site.

i wanna hear more about this supposed loss of performance w/ a really light flywheel. fidanza is pretty pricey. the mazdaspeed one is only like $190 shipped on corksport. does anyone else sell spec besides s t r e e t u n i t . c o m?

First, what are you doing to your car that you will need a heavier duty clutch? If you are turboing, then you will need one. If not, stick with the Exedy replacement clutch.

Second, do not get the MS lightened flywheel. It is only about 2lbs lighter than stock so you would be wasting your money. If you really want to spend the money on a flywheel, get the Fidanza. I have one, and there is no performance loss, your engine will not fall apart, and whatever anyone has told you about it that doesn't have one is most likely not true.

Third, I believe there was a TSB issued on the P5 clutch for chattering. I don't know what the issue is, but at least take your car to your mechanic and ask him to drive it and get his opinion.

unfortunately, i'm out of my warranty so a tsb is gonna do me no good. hows the fidanza vs the spec lightened flywheel? i think i'm gonna go with your advice and get the exedy oem replacement cluth in order to make the flywheel more affordable. thanx for the help

just all around better. right now i'm leaning towards the spec. i think its 2 pounds heavier than the fidanza making it a little more drivable and its supposed to be more servicible. i wish there was someone that has tried both and could tell me exactly

honestly, you just answered your own question. I doubt you will find horror stories with either flywheel. Its really just preference. I went with Spec stg 2 & fidenza.

i think i'm gonna get a spec flywheel and stick w/ my stock clutch. my mechanic said my clutch is fine but my flywheel isn't. i'll spend the money i woulda spent on a new clutch and get new rotors

Define "servicible" [sic: servicable] as well.

The Fidanza has replaceable friction surfaces.
