Mazda Protege 5
Whats good 2 all... I've had my P5 for two years now and for the past 3 months my motor has been knocking. But it started out dumb faint to the point i didnt even notice it. I changed the oil and it shut the hell up. But now its beyond crazy. I couldnt even drive to work. I lost damn near all throttle response also. I almost got smacked by a short bus. I have 47xxx miles on da whip and maintained it like no otha. I dont kno wat da deal is. I had it towed to Mazda today cuz i dont trust drivin it. My mods are AEM intake, HKS exhaust, Comp clutch, test-pipe, UR crank pulley, and Bosch plat. plugs...these mods by no means could, would, or should cause what im hearin and feelin. WTF...tell me im not the only one with this issue...holla

What's up Mike? Welcome 2 the boards.

I'm no expert, and I haven't experienced what you describe, but I have been reading up on the p5 motor because I've been having weird noises as well. I would see what the dealer says, and definetly search the boards.

Do you drive the car hard?

Ive searchin and have found that others have been experiencing the same type of drama. Actually, too many to just call it a coincidence. And Ill put it too u like this...if a Si gets on my ass, im gettin him off...no questions asked. I use 93 octane gas and change oil regularly. I baby my car when i ride with my lady and shes with me 90% of the time. SO as far as im concerned...if mazda doesnt remedy my cars illness, imma part out whats good and get a MSP motor.

true but if i modify the oil delivery system ASAP, that will hopefully save my ass. I might invest in some RX8 parts. Besides, the MSP is only a last resort and if the motor is cheaper than fixing the car.

Its probably the plugs. I had the Bosch platinum double or triple tips, whatever. They were total s***, not designed for harsh driving, or Japanese vehicle, or something. Lots have been said about them. I think one person on the forum had no problem with them. I had them for 10K miles. The car shook, sputtered, and got s*** for mileage after the 10K miles. I threw in the good ol NGKs, and it was smooth sailing from there. The Bosch plugs looked like they were just plain blown up when I took them out.

They are good in German cars, though. Had them in all my VW's. But never, ever, ever again in my Mazda.

That was the issue with my grls 626 RaiderMP5. Since the 626 and P5 share the FS motor, I gave her bosch plat's that i bought a month ahead of time and they were total s***. 2.5 weekes later the car felt like a wooden rollercoaster. This issue is oil system related from what i am gatherin from other posts. keep the input comin

Maybe i should jack her motor...

Can you explain more about the oil system problem? I am not following at all. I read your posts, but did not see anything about the oil delivery. Can you help me out with some details?

Is it a knocking sound or a ticking sound? knocking means rod bearing gone. Ticking means topend problems usually. I'm betting on rod knock.

I heard somewhere there is a TSB for cold engine knock on these motors, and that the dealer reprograms hte ECU to fix the problem, I only HEARD this but can't find any info to see if its true, I have a knock as well mostly when I accelerate but its only when the motor is cold.

So.. you gonna put rx-8 parts on your p5? Bad ass.. (glare)

I just spoke to a rep at Mazda...they quoted me $7000 to replace the motor. They wont touch it because the said the oil was changed improperly and i had an extra quart of oil in the motor that was causing the knock. I had Lube Express change the oil all the time. Its more conveinient than going back and forth to Mazda. Then they asked y i didnt bring it in earlier and i did but some dickhead told me it was my intake. My INTAKE...r u f'n kiddin me. i hate this whole experience. If ne1 knows a good fence who can get me a MSP motor, holla at me. Otherwise...im pullin my pants down and bendin over

Alright, well perhaps your crank pully (I'm assuming it's underdrive, not just lightweight) is the culprit. Could have led to a loss in oil pressure resulting in oil starvation and you might have spun a bearing or something... Just a thought.

Btw xelderx overhead cam engines don't have rods...

Hmm so Mazda said it was you intake huh?...heaven forbid if you had decals on it then they may of blamed it on the decals (glare) . Mazda will be quick to blame it on the stupidist of things but oh well.

The oil pump is driven directly off the crank so the crank pulley doesn't affect it. The oil pump still works as long as the crank is turning whether there is a pulley on the end of it or not. The oil starvation on FS-DE motors is because of the oil pick-up design in the oil pan itself. These motors do have an oil starvation issue and a low oil level in the pan amplifies the problem. The first thing to go on the FS motors when the oil pressure drops are the rod bearings (the bearings where the connecting rods and the crank go together). Overhead cam motors don't have pushrods, but they do have connecting rods.

I have a loose butterfly valve in my intake manifold that I've been trying to fix. My symptoms is poor idling when cold and stumbles and tries to die during hard acceleration. Afterwards it throws a check engine light and drives poorly for the next 40 miles and then check engine light goes out and drives normal again.

I was suppose to remove my IM again this weekend for the repair but I got smacked by a lifted Toyota Tacoma yesterday morning. My driver-side front fender is history and left side of my neck and shoulder feels like s***. Doc got me on Naproxen and 5 days of light duty. So I'm off for the next 5 days but I can't work on my car.

You know who this Mike guy reminds me of? Orlando Jones's character form Office Space. You know who I'm talking about, that cracked out magazine salesman? I can totally see these words coming out of his mouth!

Yea, tellin me it was the intake was straight BS. I shoulda bought an Evo. At least Mitsubishi services mod'd cars. Neway, I found a MSP motor for an unmentionable price. So all is well. I should be taking delivery by next friday. Im doin the complete swap. Hopefully this time I wont have ne problems. Im tearin my motor apart so if neone wants nething, throw me a number and its yours(springs, intake, pulley, wateva...).

Thanks for the help guys.
