UDP belt squeal

I just got the OBX brand UDP and I was wondering if the belt sizes would be about the same as the Unorthodox, or RR UDP??

Anyone else have the OBX UDP??

If you can stand having your car down for a little bit do this: Install the pulley like you would then without putting belts on adjust the two tensioners so they are 1/4 - 1/2 of the way out from the shortest setting. Next take some string or twine and run it around both sets of pulleys and pull them tight. Make a mark where the two ends cross for each set and then pull the strings off and measure. From the lengths of the two peices of string you should be able to find out what belt number you'd need. IIRC, you can go to Goodyear's website and they have descriptions of how the belt numbers correspond to the number of ribs and the length. Hope this makes some sense.

Yah that is a great idea. But I think I am going to just try the same belt sizes since I could probably just tighten or loosen with the tensioner if it is to loose or tight with those belts. They are probably not to different to matter. We will see. Thanks, Dan

Is it a must to torque the UDP bolt to 120lbs of torque? Don't have a torque wrench right now and I really want to install mine now. Anyone know about how many turns 120lbs of torque is??

I wouldn't say it's exactly an amount of 'turns' per se but the force required to turn it. IMO, I would just go to Walmart and shell out the $$$ for a torque wrench - they're pretty cheap there and definitely something useful to have. Of course you could always go to Sears or where ever to get a better one but my Walmart wrench has worked fine for two years. I would say hold off the install until you get that - you wouldn't want the crank pulley walking it's way off...

120 isnt that much...you should be able to do that w/ a breaker bar. the car doesnt even put out that much torque so you should be ok if you are in the ballpark

i got a cheapo pep boys tq wrench for like 19 i think

Yah, I just went ahead and bought a torque wrench along with a socket set for it since it has a 1/2" head on it. I will need this for my engine build anyways. I should be installing it tonight so I will post up some pics later since I have not even heard of anyone using the OBX UDP

Yes there were belt part numbers mentioned earlier in the thread but which exact one would you need for the OBX UDP?

I'd be shocked if the variances in the diameters from each manufacturer's UDP were beyond the tolerances than the belt lengths themselves and belt adjusters would accommodate for.

Did we ever figure out a definate solution to the belt squeal from a UDP, did not have the time to read 7 pages. I have the OBX UDP and Gator back belts. I tightened the belts as much as they should be and they are still squealling

I had the squeal, went down a size on the alternator/ps pump side and had since not come back.

I was maxed out on the adjustment screw on the alternator.

Well guys, I couldn't stand the squeaking belts anymore so I decided to go back to the stock pulley since I had to replace the belts anyway. I took a pic of the Unorthodox pulley next to the stock one to give you guys an idea of the size difference. When I used the UDP, I used the Goodyear Gatorback belts from Autozone and I used the sizes that they had in the system for our car. They were part numbers 4040360 (4-rib 36.00") and the 4050457 (5-rib 45.75"). In order to tighten the belts, I had to pretty much tighten the tension bolt all the way to the end. Looking at the position of the tension bolt now with the stock pulley in place, it's tightened about halfway. Not sure if this is the cause of the squeaking but if anyone wants to try shorter belts, I have found different size gatorbacks if you're interested. I think I will try giving the UDP another chance when it's time to change the belts again since I'm not pleased with the noticeable performance difference.

For those that are interested in trying the shorter belts, here are the part #s. I haven't tried any of these so don't ask me which ones to use. They may vary based on the size of your UDP.

Alternator belt (Stock is 4-rib 36.00")
4040332 (4-rib 33.00")
4040335 (4-rib 33.50")
4040340 (4-rib 34.00")
4040342 (4-rib 34.25")
4040347 (4-rib 34.75")
4040350 (4-rib 35.00")

Power Steering belt w/AC (Stock is 5-rib 45.75")
4050405 (5-rib 40.50")
4050410 (5-rib 41.00")
4050420 (5-rib 42.00")
4050435 (5-rib 43.50")
4050450 (5-rib 45.00")

Yah I would try the shorter belts if I were you. The Gatorback I used I had to tighten the tensioners all the way and I don't think it was still enough. So I would not go with the part numbers from my belts after all. I finally got rid of my OBX UDP as well because I could not stand the squeeking either.

which shorter one's? i dont want to get belts that just dont even fit. I mean some peoples gatorbacks worked. I just called autozone they have them in stock. if its a squel just from start for 5min while the car heats up i can deal. How bad of a squel are we talking about here n e way?

My belts squeeked everytime I started my car, every time I turned on my A/C, and every time I would stop and go. So yah I would try something a little shorter than what I got which I still dont know yet... If someone could shime in here that would be rad

my RR UDP belts have only squeaked when soaking wet and/or very cold, AND I was accelerating from a stop. I have the gatorbacks, shorter belt lengths. Squealing is super rare now :)

are these the one's you have?
gatorbacks
4050457 for the AC/PS and the 4040360 for the Alt/WtrPmp
