Considering that the one major downfall to our Pro5 is a lack of power it seems going Turbo is the only real way to make a major diffrence. Before I even try to explain to my wife why I feel its necessary to spend a 3k or more for the extra 30-40 ponies, I need to understand what long term effects a turbo does to my car. Im really crossing my fingers hoping that you'll all tell me that nothing will change a bit!
 
take good care of the motor (ie:) do everything RIGHT the first time, stay good on oil changes, don't push it all the time, watch your guages, just take good care of it. you can last 5-10 years on the same set-up.

A good buddy of mine has a Supra Turbo. His car has made over 700rwhp for about 6 years now. The trick is, just take care of it.

If you don't, then there could be some ugly problems.
 
Reliability is always an Issue with Aftermarket turbo Kits. As your motor wasnt Built for boost. People have Good Sucess with them....but its not 100% reliable. Your are opening yourself up for serious Motor Damage.

Your best bet would be to Get a Set of Cams, and Header from the Japanese Market Protege 5. This will yield a Good power increase and Reliability wont be a Concern.

If you have your Dealer install these parts you will maintain your Factory Warentee.

Just a thought before you go Sink Huge Money in a Turbo Kit.

What's the status on P5 owners doing a Mazdaspeed engine upgrade? Are the parts going to be available from Mazda (while not voiding the warrantee)? I would pay the extra $$ even if the results aren't as good as a Flying or Spoolin kit just to still have the warrantee and to be able to take it in when something isn't working.
 
The cams are a barely noticable effect and will help you drop 2/10s thats it. If you are going for power do turbo or leave the car alone. Nothing else is worth it.

A turbo will be a good upgrade but you will void the warrenty, dealerships will refuse service and even minor problems become a big headache. Oil, water and fule leaks are the main ones but a boost or intake leak are the guarenteed pain in the ass.

Another thing to remeber is that even wiht a turb your car will only approach the power of others cars stock. You will not easily outrun a WRX, RSX types S a GTI 1.8T or alot of other compacts. The tubo needs to be for you alone and not to show off to others as you will be chumped.
Also expect atleast $1000 in extras. You will need a new clutch, the stock one will slip even with modest boost and a exhuast is a definite/ Additionaly you will want a few guages aswell and you have to pay for accuracy.
 
my recomendtion to you to help keep you out of trouble and keep you a little more satisfied the the power is to call terry at spoolin'
if im not mistakin he can hook you up with a relatvly low boost kit around 4psi that will be perfect for that extra pep your looking for.
the stock internals and tranny can handle it just fine. but i warn you that when you go turbo you dont go back!
youll want more boost :D

You'll need the warentee after you do that.....Tis no better than what you have now. Might as well go Aftermarket at least then it will be Fast and more reliable IMO.....

I don't think you will get flamed as you can't really do it as you can buy the parts but you will also need a MSP PCM to make it work. By the time your done doing all that crap you might aswell get the MSP especialy since only 1 person has been brave enough to go for the LSD install in a none MSP and he has been and will be out of a car for months.

It would probably be easier to get a MSP and have its body reworked into a wagon then it would be to go the other way!

Hmm, buy an MSP...lift off the orange cabin, drop on my P5 cabin. Sell the MSP do some dumb schmuck. . .
