My old MX6 GT had a fairly obnoxious alarm if I left the headlights or parking lights on when I killed the ignition, so I never exited the door without turning the lights off. Still, your reasoning is valid in that few people need to keep their headlights on after they shut down their cars. I noticed that many newer vehicles have timers that leave the headlights on for a period of time. That is often helpful when bringing in groceries or other items while parked in a dark area. For the same reason (and to see obstructions) garage door lights have a timer as well.

You could use a Beuler BU-508TD time delay relay to accomplish that...
