From the New York Auto Show:

Hyundai Sonata Turbo and Hybrid
Hyundai's hot streak continues here in the Big Apple as the automaker unveils two innovative new versions of its successful Sonata. The 2011 Sonata 2.0T brings GDI turbocharging to the people, with the kind of power — 274-horses — reserved for higher-end models and respectable gas mileage — 34 mpg highway, 22 city — as well. The Sonata Hybrid might be even bigger news, with a new kind of lithium-polymer battery pack that Hyundai says is more energy dense, but also more stable than existing cells. The result is a hybrid that gets better mileage on the highway than in the city — 39/37 mpg, respectively — and runs electric-only up to 62 mph.

Pretty crazy !!!!!

Yeah good that direct injection is becoming more popular so people can figure it out.

But the Turbo Sonata is auto only.

damn as much hp as us but they get 34mpg ?

Hybrid... Might not have the same zoom factor as we do though. They pay a weight pentalty for the electric motors, batteries, and dynamic breaking system. Most of these things are heavy.

No? The GDI version is a gasoline direct injected 274hp motor achieving 34mpg on regular unleaded. It's just plain better.

OOHHH I misread the first post. Its a hybrid model AND a GDI. I thought it was a combo of the two...

But 34mph highway is nothing special. I can usually get that without much effort. My best tank ever averaged 32mpg combined city/highway. That was calculated, not clocked on the computer.

Man, I can't drive that slow. My best mileage was a pinch under 31 on the interstate. That was during break-in.

I watch my millage computer like a hawk when I drive. The drive to work is 84 miles round trip. In the morning my vision is usually blurry, head hurts and im super pissed because I'm awake before 11am. Traffic is heavy and driving fast means swirving all over the highway which requires way more effort and focus then I am prepared to handle at such an ungodly hour. So I just hit CC and stay in the middle at 65-70mph and let others pass me while cuss at everyone around me. Drive home is about the same only I'm worn out and again, just too lazy to deal with trying to go fast with all that traffic.

On top of that I don't speed much anyway... try to keep the tickets away and insurance down.

Even at 75mph though I can often get over 30mpg (although not uphill).

haterz keep on hatin'

i like the stat about the electric motor in use up to 62mph....i think the prius only uses its up to the mid 40s or something

that motor would be awesome if they put it in the genesis coupe. and i would bet you could get way better mileage out of it then rated like every car on the road.

hyundai is making a huge turnaround and coming out with some very nice cars

couldn't agree more.. on both your statements.. i'm actually trying to convince my sister to get a new 3.8 genesis coupe because she wanted to get a 3.5 altima coupe.. and they are basically the same price.

Its the turbo model that gets 34mpg, not the hybrid. Hybrid version gets 37mpg city/ 39mpg highway. I'm more impressed with the turbo version and its 34mpg.

Yeah, which means the real life mileage on this Hyundai will get above 40+mpg on a steady 55mph highway cruise, plus its a large car with more weight.

I think the Turbo Sonata would be a great car for someone whos got a family and needs the room and the good gas milege, But also wants some freakin power to have alittle fun and pass people on the freeway. And I agree Hyundai is making better cars as time goes on, I think they got some work to do with the Genesis..alittle heavy with the v6...but the potential is there..few more tweeks and some improvements and thier lineup is gonna get pretty serious, thats my feeling anyways. And when China starts getting into the car market, and they love cutting corners..Hyundai is gonna feel like a bmw compared to those cars lol.
