turbo, supercharger, fsze, or ITB'???

The best thing to do on this motor to increase power, without a doubt, is a good turbo system.

A supercharger won't make the power you want.

Naturally aspirated won't even come close.

A turbo on the other hand, will make more power than you need on the street:

At 3.5psi of boost i was putting down 160hp. Im now running 9.5psi (have not dyno'd yet)

As for proven claims, Im the only one that has done this so i dont really have anything to back me up (taken it this far on the SC for the protege). I still have the option to get a smaller pulley for the SC.

I dont have to worry about leaking oil/coolant lines from the turbo or tapping the oil pan. Install took less than 3 hours. The only down side is loosing the A/C. I think its worth it though.

find out what the budget is. you can get a basic turbo setup for the MSP for a cool grand. looks like the supercharger is a similar price but requires considerably more fabrication work.

its all in the budget. figure out what you can spend now (including rebuild), and what you would want to spend over the life of the car. also find out if you can save your rebuild for a rainy day.
get those straight, then we can give you better advice.

Hkpro5 is the 160hp number bhp or whp? And the cheapest option will probably be the one. I'm gonna replace all the gaskets and bearings. That what I mean by rebuild. Is there anything else ill really need to do for rebuild? I recently changed engine oil and trans fluid and brake fluid. I also had a new timing belt and tensioner belt and all other belts replaced in the past year.
I did the math this morning and the na route will be more expensive than sc it looks like. If I did na these would be the items:
0.020 over fsze pistons. Yes than can be bored over
Corksport power series and fsze cams
Eibach valve springs
Custom longpipe header
Some head work
Possibly a form of ecu or engine management.
All of these plus the labor for head work and boring it out really stacks up the bill. And if I wanted to make power I would also include midieval pulleys and an unorthodox udp. That would jack it up to at least 1500$

For a supercharger I would do bearings and gaskets and bolts too. Here's a list of the rest:
Supercharger
Intercooler (can I use the intercooler piping as the intake piping? I'm a bit confused on how the ics work)
Bov
Mounting hardware.
Boost guage
Msp ecu (I had a friend at mazda flash me for mp3 spec. Would it be okay to remain there? I'm sure I can get him to flash me to msp for free again...)

Is that it? Id love turbo but for price right now it looks like its between na and sc.

Hkpro5 can you post up some shots from your build and sc placement and what not?

i already got plenty of suspension goodies. i have the msp strut bar, msp rear sway bar, msp front sway bar (though i am not going to install it because im really happy with the balance right now and i dont want understeer), tein stech springs, camber bolts, and soon i will have tokico blues. i just want something that goes faster now. i handle really well but i need some speed too.

if you check out my build thread I have tons of pictures there. But if you want I can post some here.

That was 160whp.

I used a 2.5" piping kit for my regular and intercooled setup. If you are boosting under 5psi you won't need an intercooler. Beverage I raised my boost up I needed it .

If I can use the P5 ecu you should have no problem using the MSP ecu.

okay but with msp ecu will i need ssafc?

and yes please, post some pictures. especially about how you mounted the sc and how you hooked up the ic and all of the piping (not just for the inter cooler, all piping) i would really appreciate that as i am going to work and have no time to look through your thread anymore.

thanks man i really appreciate it. you are so helpful. thanks to you i may be going the sc route actually. i thought it was gonna be more of just a theory for me but it is looking like a deffinite possibility,

How did you route it? If all I seriously need is sc, that kit, bov, mounting(which I'm confused about) and msp flash this sounds really good. The only thing is that I don't want to lose air conditioning. :( I just got it fixed this summer and I loved having it.

Ill just look in the morning.

Right now it looks like s/c will be the path I'm taking. My dad doesn't want to make any commitments yet, but I feel very confident in this. I found everything I need w/ rebuilding s*** for about 800 dollars. So here I say it

Summer 2011 supercharger build.

:)

here you go.

Supercharger to Intercooler. (modified outlet pipe)

Intercooler ( this is mounted where the A/C condenser is)

IC to MAF (The bov is located right under the pipe after the blue coupler. from the maf goes to a 90* pipe to the throttle body)

Larger crank pulley

Here is a little problem that I ran into. (this can be solved by designing a different SC inlet) The lower coolant hose is kinda blocked by the SC inlet. (I had to notch it to make it fit.)

This is what it used to look like before the intercooler.

Thanks that helps. But where is your intake filter? And I need to understand how to mount the sc.
