So my turbo took a s*** on me yesterday and I am now having to replace it. Is the MSP turbo an off the shelf Garrett turbo, if it is what is the part number to replace it. What are some other options I have? I don't care to upgrade as I just want this to be my daily driver.

Well you can get your stock one rebuilt, by buying a new Center Rotating Assymbley. Or, you can get a new garrett turbo. If you are modded and have plenty of mods get a gt28rs (the larger turbo)

Thanks. Pardon my ignorance but how effective is rebuilding a turbo? Obviously it is much cheaper but is it enough or is it more apt to fail again than a new turbo?

By the time you pay for a CHRA, you may as well get a brand new turbo. Not too much price difference. Contact ATP Turbo, they can replace the CHRA if needed.

if you do replace the whole turbo for sure upgrade to a GT28RS. Just run it at real low boost. The stock ECU can easily handle it, and to be honest we fit the GT28RS on my car (with minor modification) without having to replace anything. We (guys at PG) actually were able to bolt up the stock plasic intake pipes and stock exhaust. the only parts that got added to my completely stock car was the Turbo and Forge WGA. I didn't have a choice since my exhaust parts and FMIC hadn't come in yet and I needed to get the car home for work. I drove it that way for about a month then we installed a midpipe and FMIC. You can tell the turbo needed to breath a bit better, and was happy to get the midpipe.

Maybe I need to edit my initial post. By "taking a s***" I mean losing oil, I noticed a large oil puddle where my car was parked and found the source of the leak to be my turbo. My turbo however does still spool and produce boost so perhaps I do not need the whole CHRA and can have the seals replaced?

Try source the oil leak. It could be just a loose oil line and not the seals or other internal components.

The stock turbo is a GT2554R by the way. Dual ball bearing (R).

I should've continued by saying that when I pulled off the intercooler to turbo pipe there was a substantial amount of oil in the turbo as well as oil lining the pipe. It seems to me that the oil was coming leaking at the intercooler as logically that is the first place it can escape. As per KrayzieFox's reply would http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GRT-TBO-001&Category_Code=GRT be a direct bolt in replacement turbo? I have no intentions to mod or upgrade the turbo, I just want to continue to use the car as my DD.

does this car have any mods?
The reason we keep pushing the GT28RS is due to the fact that it's the same price if not cheaper through the right source and more HP per psi. Meaning you can run lower lower boost and make more power. I'm only running 4 psi and making 190WHP. The only real mod you need is a upgraded midpipe so the turbo will breath better. The rest of the car can be made to work.

Is the part that I am hung up on. I am indifferent towards making more power, all I care about is being able to making the car reliable. My car has 73000 miles and no mods. Additionally what is the exhaust housing A/R for the stock turbo?

I could understand that. If you have zero though about any mods then a stock turbo most likely be the best option. If you ok spending another $200 on a midpipe, or less if you find a used one, then a GT28RS would be better suited. The stock turbo on the MSP is nice but has had issues. It's not rebuildable so another injury to it may result in a complete new turbo again, where the GT28RS can be rebuilt. Either way good luck getting your MSP back on the road.
My turbo took a s*** which is why I decided to upgrade. It only made sense since the better turbo was cheaper.
If you do decide to go with the GT28RS I can shhot some pics of what was modded on the plastic pipes to make them fit.
I keep them around so when I need Warranty work I remove the FMIC and exhaust and toss on all the stock parts.

Yeah send me some pics. I am entertaining all ideas now for a replacement. I would prefer something to just bolt on and me start driving my car again.

Zuku, thanks for your help

Are you sure the stock turbo is a gt2554r? because the spool up time is much shorter on my gt2554r compared to the stock gt25-bb. i have heard from many people (including garrett)that the gt2554r is more agressive than the stock msp turbo.

btw, things you will need.......

gt2554r (47111-3) or something like that
compressor outlet flange adapter
clock the turbo (diy, easy)
re-use (or get new...but why) coolant and oil lines
gaskets and o-rings

but before you go new turbo.....try replacing the o-ring on the oil return pipe. i dont know if anyone mentioned this but check to see if you can see oil on the two allen bolts on the bottom of the turbo. if this is it, the fix is only a few dollars.

this is a pretty big selling point... ive read more than once about people who have replaced their stock turbo with another stocker and had it take a dump within a few thousand miles. i think there were other issues with the cars, but the fact remains...

no, you have to buy a new CHRA as already mentioned. they run to the tune of like 600 dollars. something crazy like that.

i dont mean to hijack this thread but this is kinda the same problem im having...

I drive my car alot (im up to 143k miles) and ive noticed lately that ive been burning oil, up to the tune of 1.5 qts every 1k miles or so. Im not leaking oil anywhere but sometimes i can smell it through the exhaust when i come to a stop so its burning through the car somewhere. im guessing valve seals, piston rings, or the turbo (which im leaning towards).

I dont really know a way to check the valve seals. i have a compression tester to test the piston rings that im gonna try tomorrow when i do an oil change. What im really leaning towards is my turbo and im wondering what ways i have to check it? its really hard to remove the intercooler pipes for me without taking the intercooler off which involves taking the bumper off, etc, which sucks. is there anyway for me to see if oil is leaking out of the exhaust side? also my wastegate is bad so i havent been able to get on my car in a long time but when i do if i get upwards of 7-8 psi i have to regulate it with my foot and sometimes ill get a huge cloud of smoke.

im guessing from reading around here that our turbo oil seals tend to go fairly often and that they arent worth rebuilding correct? Im sorry im kinda rambling trying to get my thoughts on here quickly cause i have to get to work but any help which be appreciated. Also, could high mileage oil help? i noticed mobil 1 makes synthetic high mileage now.
