When you talk about stand alone managment system, what kind of system are you talking about? There is something already avalaible for the MP3? If I need the S-AFC, I'll probably take your's. It look like you know a lot about turbo, I don't. I'm very interested to do it but since it's a new car, I'm not sure about it...

STOU...All cars come with ecu's that control ignition and fuel curves of cars amongst a host of other things. Problem with this is when u modify your car / example lets say you put an intake, exhaust and cams you are increasing the air flow into and out of the motor. This means that your fuel and ignition settings are set to an optimum for factory settings but when you change variables they are no longer at optimum settings because you have increased the amount of air comming into and leaving your engine and the more air comming in the more fuel you will need. I am trying to simplfy this whole process here as much as possible so that anyone can understand.
Now lets say you add a turbo to the mix/ which is basically force feeding air into your motor verses a regular non-turbo car is sucking air. So you have this hair dryer(turbo) cramming air into you intake manifold and your stock ecu is providing the paramaters what it was designed for so it becomes obsolete. This is where an S-AFC comes in and manipulates or tricks the stock computer to add more fuel. This works well for low boost sytems but acts kinda of like a band-aide solution.
This is where a stand alone engine managment system comes into play. With this system you get rid of the ecu that the car came with and replace it with one that can be programmable. So you can custom design it to your needs with a labtop computer or keypad. You start from scratch and reprogram all aspects such as when your cooling fan comes on and you build new curves paramaters. Like at every 50 rpm you can tell this new ecu via your labtop to control how much fuel you wnt how much spark and at what ignition timing you want to be at. You have ultra-precise control of what is happening at all times. What does this mean for you?? You can tune your car more precisely therfore getting more horsepower at lets say 5psi vs a system that is using an S-AFC. How much horspower?? well that depends on who is tunining your system but lets say if a regular car makes 160hp the stand alone at the same psi level may make upwards of 30-40 more horsepower. You can also boost more because you have a sytem that is catered to your exact specs...kinda like making a custom chip for your car.
So whats the down side to all of this??

I hope I did not confuse you stou but ask your shop if they install engine managment systems and if you would like to learn more about turbo chargers there is a really awesome book called MAXIMUM BOOST by corkey bell. It will give you and tell you all that you want to know!!!

SpoolinMP3, thanks for the explanation on the stand alone managment system. I'm not too bad at working on cars and bikes. I do valve, piston, crank and other thing like that on motorcycle so you don't confuse me when you talk about air/fuel mixture and the need to ajust the setting of the car. Where I know a bit less on cars and bikes it's about electronic, fuel injection and turbo system. I use to work on older carburator system. I know that there's some programable ECU avalaible but I didn't know that those ECU where kind of one size fits all! I also know the basic function of a turbo system but not too much.

From what I can see about stand alone managment system, the big problem is to find somebody who has the right equipment and the experience to do a good job on the car. A good tuner can do great things and a bad one can blow-up your engine!!!

I already ordered some books from amazone.com but the one from Corky Bell is back order. I'm suppose to received "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes this week.

I saw on an other post that you are working on a turbo system for your MP3, when do you think it will be ready?

Danny my turbo is not getting done at a shop. The only thing that is being done out of house is my intercooling piping. (Some place in noth miami called world wide) If you want I can meet up on wed and thurs those are my days off. I work the weekends.
