Turbo for an auto P5: good or bad?

Hi all, well i have an auto P5 and i was wondering if installing a turbo on my P5 is good or bad.

I heard that automatics would cause problems for the turbo because of the shifting in gears.

I dont know so any suggestion would be nice. thanks

heh, well uhh with an auto it would be harder to get full boost cuz of the shift points that you have no control over.

i donno prolly not, cuz you can shift at what rpm you want. oh yeah, this auto turbo thing also depends on the turbo your gonna get too. a smaller turbo will spool and reach full boost faster than a bigger one. if you got a bigger one on an automatic, you would need to change your shift points so that you are able to reach the full boost that you want. if its a small turbo then you might reach full boost before the factory shift point. also, the bov is used less cuz your throttle plate will stay open during acceleration, so you have less spool down with an auto, which is good (advantage over manual).

ah ha!!! that's sweet. now only if flyinprotege would hurry up and finalize their production of a turbo kit for the automatics. just kidding. i'm not going turbo till my warranty runs out. and at this rate, it's not going to be until 2006. so yeah...

Yeah, same here - I've got a little under 17000 miles on my 2002 ES Auto Sportshift.

I haven't had a single problem with the car. I have really good luck with cars, I have always taken very good care of them though. But I figure 'Murphys Law' would be sure to strike if I mess with the engine while it's still under warranty. Besides - I've got a goddamn $309.18 per month payment since I only put $500 down. I know I know- I need to refinance. I just moved into my new place, so I'm kinda busy.

yep... too busy to save money - crazy

well....my car has 37632 miles on it as of june 1. I was planning on going turbo with an automatic. thanks for the input guys.

ok so heres another question: My cousin suggested that i go SUPERCHARGE since my car is an auto. I couldnt find anything the web for superchargers, so any url would be nice.

What do you think? good or bad?

i am pretty sure no one makes a blower that is reasonably affordable. turbo is the way to go if you want the lowest $/hp ratio. there are at least three turbo kits out now... so that's good. competition keeps the prices down. superchargers, on the other hand... no one really makes it. i know area 51 made one for the wings west protege, but it's retarded expensive. good luck and check back if you can dig something up re: superchargers.

Manual or automatic, you can run turbo on either one. In drag racing some people prefer going sequential, or automatic because you don't see turbo lag between shifts. Where as a manual transmission the throttle platle is closed between shifts. If you don't have a BOV that can cause "compressor surge", which over time can damage the turbo. You can run turbo on your auto but, you have to find a kit that is designed for an auto P5 or get the piping of an existing kit modified. I am not sure....but you might have to upgrade your torque converter. Good luck! :D

with an auto, the turbo stays spooled higher than a standard, but doesn't eliminate spool down. remember, as you go through the gears, the rpms fall and so does your charge pressure. it works this way for both turbos and superchargers, but superchargers are directly dependent on rpm. they are driven by a belt off the crank. this means that it takes power to make power. those huge blowers on those top fuel dragsters, they make almost 1000hp BUT require like 400-600hp to run.

if your a hardcore fan of turbo, you should watch a tractor pull event on tv or go to one. the unlimited class tractors have 2-4 turbos that have i'de say 5" impellers. you hear more turbo than engine. and those things produce around 1-2.5 thousand hp.

well, i just email Spool Turbo about any suggestion on getting a turbo for automatics and this is the reply:

Our stage 1 kit non intercooled fits the automatic protege. I only reccommend this kit since any more power will over strain the transmission. If you have any further questions feel free to contact me
Thanks

also got other email reply from other sources too like FM. They also say about the samething, that the tranny wont be able to handle the power and if i really want more power from the turbo i would need to do some mods so that my tranny would be able to handle the power.

I might need to do some more searching around the forums and web if i want the turbo or not.

Check back for updates auto P5s

I too have an auto and wanted turbo. A shame that we have to spend more $$ to get the same performance from a manual tranny...=( GIMME TURBO OR GIMME K20A SWAP!!

I know I'm really thinking about the turbo kit as well. I'm probably going to pick up a 03 ES(auto) I would like to get the 5 speed but I'm just not so sure driving a sick in SoCal traffic. I had a nissan 240 and my clutch would overheat like crazy through the Orange Crush. For those not in SoCal the crush is a merge sometimes taking 45minutes to an hour to drive 1 1/2 miles

watch as I bump this thread........

Ok, my car will be running Perfs kit. I have a 2002.5 Protege ES with the "sportshift" Automatic. I'll be sure to post as much as I can about how it goes.

I don't beat on my car. I have almost 18,000 miles on my car now. I have been running it on Regular unleaded gas (87 octane) and all my oil changes have been with Mobil 1 5w-30w every 3000. When I got the car I changed the oil at 500 miles, then 1500, then 3000. I try to be nice on it, but occasionally I'll drive aggressively. Fastest I've driven it is roughly 108-110.

Perf and I discussed things yesterday at the shop, leaving the Racing beat exhaust, eliminating the pre-cat, internal wastegate. I can't remember much more than that. My first goal is keeping it safe, though I really want to hit 200WHP and I don't think that is a completely unrealistic goal.

One thing I have thought about is this. "They" say the stock tranny won't take more than 4.5 psi. Yet no one has tried. FM as far as I know is still looking for a test car, wait - that can't be right. I am sure someone has volunteered by now. Hell - I would expect several people have.

If I'm wrong - then please reply if you have put a Turbo on your Automatic, or if you know a member on the forum who has. I've been searching and I found a thread here. that says Spool has a few kits on auto's. Where are these people? Let's hunt them down and get some feedback. This Thread has some info on what the tranny can handle, although it's kind of hard to verify the source. This thread mentions a member who did turbo. Anyway, I think that's pretty good for now. If you find any threads that have pertinent information, please reply and add them to the thread.

The best thing about our forum, other than the members themselves, is that everything is archived. From a troubleshooting perspective, this is an invaluable asset. I will post everything that happens, and that is all I ask of anyone else.

I'll probably be making the drive down to Spool's open house with Perf and a few other NJ people. I'll look forward to seeing everyone. I'm fairly easy to pick out, short, glasses, shaved head, and the occasional evil smile.

Bump!! Nice job stepping up to tha plate holmes. I have a 2002.5 P5 with about the same amount of miles and the sport shifting capabilities you mentioned. I, too, want to go forced, but am unsure of where to go. I am really leaning towards Perfs kit with the piggyback for the ign and timing and stuff. Let me know how things go. Spoolin has the microtech completed already and is soon to be offering beefier coils for ignition. It's a toss up right now. I want to go forced but my auto is causing problems. Peace.

Wow... sounds real neat, please keep us posted. I too have an automatic sportmatic and turbo has always appealed to me. I probably should make the jaunt to Perf's joint. Where can I get details/directions?

Ps. You weren't by chance traveling north on 287 today 'round 1:00pm were you?

no, I wasn't anywhere near there. I work from 8am until 5pm - so I have an alibi.

directions to the shop. Well, you should PM Perfworks, but I'll tell you it's Exit 105 on the NJ parkway. I know how to get there, but I haven't paid attention to the streetnames, I grew up close to that area, so I just kind of know it. Basically, you get off the exit, that puts you on rt. 36 - then follow that down past the Circuit City, past the Porsche dealership, and about 4 lights past there - you make a right, and it's on the left.

See, that makes perfect sense to me, but it probably doesn't help you out much. PM Perfworks.

Will do. No reason to trek over there, yet. Just figured I'd sort of get the jist of where he's located for future reference. I've been surprised to see such a strong showing of central-jersey p5s and proteges.
