Transmission Questions...:)

Hello.

I will be going to test drive an m5, the first saturday that my wife has off, which will be in October. I am hoping the 07,s will be in, and they will let me test drive one of them, even though I realize an 06 should feel exactly the same.
There is a less then 50 percent chance I might get a manual transmission but I have a few questions to ask, since the m5 sales brochure doesnt answer it, or maybee I am out of the loop.

1) As per the manual transmission. I have never had a manual that has an overdrive. Do I understand it correctly to mean, that you are really running with four forward gears, and the fifth gear, just puts it into overdrive as a fuel saving procedure?, or is it a real fifth gear?
I hope I am saying this correctly.

2) As far as the auto transmission, it looks like from the photo in the catalog, that there is an option to shift it yourself using the bottom rung of the paddle, where there is a + and a -. I have this in my acura, and was wondering if this is true in this vehicle as well.
If it is, does it let you shift between 1st and second also, or it automatically does first and second, and you can only use third to upshift or perhaps downshift into second, with fourth gear being strickly an overdrive, or does it use a torque converter?
My acura, does not let you use 1st and second as an upshift, but after second, you can upshift to third, fourth and fifth(no overdrive) and down to second.

One reason I am asking, is there is a fair amount of hills and climbs where I live, especially going in the 30 to 40 miles per hour range, and wanted to know the flexibility of the transmission, to get the most out of the sparcity of horsepower the m5 has.

Is the manual trannie, smooth shifting? Is it very particular of the rpm,s you shift at?
How is it in stop and go traffic, which I encounter an awful lot.

Thanks to one and all, for taking the time to read my posts and to shoot back information to me.

Stay safe

it is an actual five speed manual transmission. you'll have to shift it into 5th if you want to use it as "overdrive" rather than cruise around in 4th. I never understood why car companies did that in thier literature.

The 'manumatic' or 'sport shift' option allows you to slap the shifter left or right to change gears on the transmission. others may correct me if i am wrong, but i do not think the transmission will shift itself in this mode at all even if you are redlining it, shifting is left entirely to the driver in that mode.

i have driven manual and auto trans 5s and i am very pleased with how smooth the auto trans shifted. the manual transmission was nice as well, nicer than what mazda put in my car (pissed)

Actually, with the manual, technically both fourth and fifth gears are overdrive. Fourth gear's ratio is 0.970, fifth is 0.755 (taken from the mazdausa.com web site). All you really need to know is that there are five forward gears.

The manual has very easy action, shifts smoothly, and has an extremely light clutch pedal. It's very easy to get into gear. Third and fifth are located kind of close together, but I've never missed shifting into fifth.

I can say the same. I just started to drive my first vehicle with stick and can assure you that it shifts very well and it quite difficult to stall. Only one thing I found that driving mostly in city I still have to shift to 4th gear a lot because at 50-55 km/h rpm's go up to 3000 at the 3rd gear.

5MT is a smooth spirited (seems to be the word of the day). It is easy to shift and to manover in tight spots even in gear. You can release your foot from the clutch and gas (after moving) and the 5 will not stall out due to the strong torque of the engine....yup you heard it here first.

Automatic is ok and at those times on hills you do have the manual shift to let you judge your torque.

As for the overdrive I will say I use my 5th gear as a efficient gear as I can downshift from 5th if I really want to blow the doors of some slow poke infront of me on the highway.

Pending how much city driving you do daily will let you answer on your own... Manual shift you drive 24/7 ..... Automatic your a lazy fart and on for the ride (ughdance)

Let us know what you get and enjoy..... FYI 2006 and 2007 are same driving experience so please take what you can for a test drive...

Hate to be the nit-picker but... :)

You actually slap it UP and DOWN to shift it manually.

And although it won't shift up when in manual-mode automatically, it WILL downshift back to 1 when you stop...automatically.

What this car needs is a manu-matic 5-speed!

If you mean a "manual" transmission that is shifted semiautomatically, I agree completely!

The idea behind VW's DSG, for example, is exactly what I'd like to see. In fact, I'd really like to see that idea shifted fully automatically as a replacement for a torque-convertor-equipped transmission in many applications. However, I'm not interested in paying an extra $5,000 for it and all the "full sport" junk that companies like to tie together in the USA.
